4. You are either an asshole or a fool. Pick your choice.
I was wondering who uses such services these days. I deactivated them on all the lines I have except for one that kept saying it can't be done (despite my assertions that other two companies did for a fixed line and a mobile one). The only sad part is that annoying voicemail notification that will remain there forever (up to the time I don't need that carrier anymore and ditch them).
I laughed at your comment but I wonder what would happen if Google simply decided to leave Canada and only the international site worked there. This could send a powerful message.
Another way would be Google block Govt sites for LGBT diversity and things blasphemous in Iran and display a flashy note to Canadians citing that specific ruling as the reason they are being blocked based on Iran law. That would be amusing to watch too.
Re: From its CIA-funded start, Google's strategy all along has been skimming value, lying about goals, patiently gaining control, PR, payoffs, lobbying, and lawyering.
There are problems with this. The preliminary decision may stack the deck against perfectly legitimate content, even if it looks like 'infringing' in the first place. If by any chance the preliminary step is consisted mostly of dumbasses then you could 'set a precedent' or a 'mindset' to a possible trial. A better alternative would have to get the govt to pay for the legal expenses until it's settled and at the same time fix the law to better characterize fair use and raise the protection bar so it's harder to be overcome.
"I get the feeling Zillow is going to keep regretting this until someone there grapples with just how dumb the company has been this week from both the legal and the communications side."
Regretting? Do the letter they sent to 'clarify' things sound like "regretting"?
On a side note, when I read things like "And EFF is now representing McMansion Hell." or involving Popehat, Randazza and other heavyweights in the area it sounds like https://youtu.be/xm7CkJ-D4cM
I'm guessing that's what Microsoft has been considering. They could charge a small monthly fee from home users to enable more personalized support and automatic updates. I'd pay for that (considering the price is sane). You could get extra perks from their systems such as automated backup and file versioning (encrypted please) all in an easy, intuitive way (they are generally good on making their things easy to use). There are plenty of services they can offer that would rack in tons of money even if Windows is open sourced.
While I do think the guy should get some punishment for this I believe he should pay a few thousand at most. The stoopid lawyers should be the ones weighting the costs for their abysmal practice.

This could actually be good without being life destroying if they have to pay for the defense fees. Should make them think twice before being assholes.
I have to disagree. I believe the need for an organized government body comes naturally when the number of people in a group increases and the activities and interactions between them get more complex. I'd say morality and panic give birth to other things like religion but not governments.
"the fear that the internet's connectivity would drown the nation's youth in easily-accessible porn"
This was exaggerated but prophetic. Everybody knows the Internet is for porn.
Jokes aside, I was reading this article the other day about porn studios being early adopters of stuff like 60 fps videos, 4k, VR and other perks that made it to mainstream afterwards (google it, it's easy to find these articles from reputable sources). Who would have thought porn would make the world a better place?
Why would one pay for cable TV nowadays besides those bundles that are cheaper than taking Internet alone is a mystery so questioning if an added fee to use Roku as a cable receiver is useless or not is... Useless.
