When he makes a viral video, it has negligible, if any, impact on Sony's ownership of the videos, let alone their ability to distribute.
Because he can actually suffer a loss here (loss of his channel, which is a scarce good), he stands to lose a lot more, and for the simple inequality of Sony attempting copyfraud by abusing the DMCA process.
Now, if Sony *only* sold stuff over their website, and someone hacked that so it was unusable, then they might begin to have a comparable loss.
Just so long as those who pick clueless dinosaur gatekeepers (as opposed to clue-full, enabling middlemen) don't whine about their choices and how everyone isn't giving them the money they feel they 'deserve'.
They're free to make that choice. And we're free to call them on it.
Yes, all those 'dollars lost' on vinyl sales, or 8-tracks, or sheet music - damn those piano players!
And think of the poor live artists put out of work! How many dollars have been 'lost' to their redundancy from new-fangled gramophones, radios and piano players?
After all, no-one is forcing the **AAs to produce anything, let alone over-priced, under-quality drivel. I'm pretty sure that if they don't bother to make anything, plenty of other people will step forward unto the breach. It's not like the **AAs /invented/ culture, is it?
I suspect most other countries who aren't utterly dependent on the US (or their poodles) already have that list. And probably they've listed all 50 states as well for good measure :)
Sorry, artists are already begging. Canute-like begging people not to pirate, along with victim-like begging the labels and collecting agencies to give them their tuppence ha'porth of royalties.
Likewise, reading can be a very social activity. It doesn't matter if it is social like reading in the coffeeshop (having people around you), social like a shared experience (all my friends have read this so I can talk with them abou it), social like reading to a partner or child, or social like an author reading to a group.
Reading isn't automatically social or unsocial, although more often than not it is immediately unsocial. But so what?
Social media isn't automatically social or unsocial, although more often than not it is immediately social. But so what?
All of these become relative value judgements, and like someone else said, this debate has been going on since TV arrived, if not longer. I'm sure we could find some examples from earlier centuries if we tried.
Like, when he was young, copyright only lasted a short time. He's lived through most of the bad copyright land-grabs - so he can see what an abuse it is!
Make him carry all his gear in obnoxious day-glo colours. Keep him away from actually dangerous areas and give him a water pistol. Make him wear his underwear on his hea. In other words, shame the heck out of him.
I first read that as 'repetitively' - I was trying to imaging making someone walk the plank and get beheaded multiple times, once for each transgression...
So what if the value appears later? Really, what did the artist's great-grandchildren do to justify not only handouts from society for nothing more than sharing some genetic code with someone, but also that they get all sorts of control over it.
