I hadn't - that's internet memes for you, they get old quickly, but they never go away. They're powerful; one click and they're back. Although I'm a continent away, the image of that twat pepper-spraying a row of seated students right in the face is seared in my memory like a brand on a cow's arse.
UC Davis is a mess. It's been a mess for a while and by the look of things, it's only getting worse. Katehi is a disgrace to the human race.
If Hofbrau Steak House and American Grille has been serving up German food in Northern Michigan for over six decades AND have been operating under the same name you would think that Hofbräu München would lose any case due to the fact that they've clearly not policed their mark for those six decades.
Trade marks should be extremely narrow, and should never be granted on common language.
Having just read that Led Zep are being sued in LA by someone who thinks the 1971 classic Stairway to Heaven copied their earlier work, I'm doubting a federal SLAPP will come about. It's baffling, this infatuation that Americans have with the Law. Does any other country have a Judge Judy?
EDIT: It's quite early here and my brain is only just coming online and I'd composed my response below reacting to your "All publicity" line thinking your post was for real... then I saw your sprinkling of "!!!" and on re-reading I realized I had nearly fallen for your gag. Well played sir/madam. Techdirt board, sorry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just my thoughts...
A: All publicity is good publicity - no, not really, this is an age-old myth
B: Lawsuits are expensive - exactly so, which is why Digital Homicide bizarrely tried to crowd-fund their litigation against Sterling and failed
C: If you're lucky you might get settlement payments - no-one really wins but the lawyers
D: This is a great opportunity to learn how the courts operate - I can't speak for you, but I'd rather gnaw my own face off than spend a day in a courtroom
See Sarah Black's comments above - this is how to respond to criticism, with a light touch and good humour. And a classic Star Trek clip.
There's always Karma. And reputation. You have to hope that he goes the same way as Rakovski. So unless he changes his name (or moves to Europe and uses his right to be forgotten), he should be lucky to end his miserable career working parking ticket disputates. In Mombasa.
Exactly so. In fact it's better that your device (or you) isn't present. That would be an undesirable complication.
Why is crippling encryption being so vigorously pursued? I would argue that data (well, information) is the most valuable commodity there is. It gives you access to all those other commodities necessary to sustain and grow. And this has always been known. To quote Sir Francis Walsingham, spymaster to Elizabeth I; "Knowlege is never too dear". Machiavelli had a thing or two to say about it too..
I have to say, the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module sounds like the ISS is getting it's own bouncy castle. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Being serious, it does look like an interesting concept and use of materials. It's also interesting how private finance and private initiatives are merging more and more with the public's. Interesting times ahead.
If you're caught carrying large amounts of cash, and are, in fact, actually in the illegal drug trade, is it a stretch to suppose that with this level of skewed priorities and dishonesty in the police that you could easily bribe your way out of charges? "Don't book this in, officers, just take the cash, it's yours".
What I'm suggesting is that with the current mindset of liberating cash and goods, the "War on Drugs" going nowhere, guilty people just might be getting off being charged, whilst innocent people are flat out being robbed.
I don't think asset forfeiture was thought through very well.
Suing Wikipedia is a dick move. It's like taking a huge, steaming dump in the corner of the Sistine Chapel... punching Snow White in the guts at Eurodisney... talking on your phone during the Requiem Mass in D Minor...
