Will CNN give credit to the person who submits data?
The submitter won't likely care.
By submittal, does that person lose all rights associated with that data?
That is assumed.
Yes, the only reason a morally non-corupt person would send CNN data they gathered is for the thrill of it all
Right.
Certainly, there would be no other reason.
The sarcasm is strong in this one, but you are missing the point. This platform is not about amateurs making a few bucks off their hobby.. this is a platform to enable participants to participate for the thrill of participation.
Seriously though, read the fine print and I guarantee they can do anything they want with your submitted pictures and video, including profit off of it.
Read that sentence to yourself over and over again.
Then you might understand just how much you said with those few words.
My point is, I am not going to submit content to them for free when I can't use their content for free.
So? Other's will, cause they have no interest in making commercial use of CNN's "stuff".
They care about doing fun things, and being a part of reporting the news is fun for them.
CNNs morality is a not really relevant. Sure, some people like yourself, will avoid this but not for the reasons you are trying to state; You will avoid taking part in this because you don't like CNN.
And that's fine. There's plenty of people who don't have that opinion, or who find their opinion of the company to be irrelevant when it comes to their decision to have fun or not.
Some people really like itunes.. some people really hate itunes.
Some people have ipods and got used to using itunes, and want to continue using itunes to manage their media library, even tho they have purchased additional devices capable of playing back media.
I don't know who these people are. I hate itunes. I love my ipod. I've tried other software to manage my library.. they sucked at managing my ipod. I have other devices that I could put music on.. (my cellphone is actually branded "walkman") but thats absurd, I never will. The ipod does that so much better, and I would never want to drain my phone battery listening to music.
And yes, it would be philanthropic of Apple to open the ecosystem. It would also hurt profits.
Wasting developer resources to sabotage another companies attempt at seamless interoperability during a very public pissing contest over who's hardware is allowed to have the "premium user experience" is absolutely a blow to the reputation of Apple, whom, if I recall correctly, consider their image to be penultimate to their success.
You think they spend all that money making fun of windows in their ads cause they want to be known as evil overlords?
Plain and simple.. this was a stupid move on Apples part.
Neumann's real problem is he found something fans really want.
Not much of a problem really.
Sure, he might have underestimated how popular his idea would be.. But what he got was an overwhelmingly happy reaction from his fans.
And he's not in the least bit upset.
Noone said CwF was supposed to be a resource free endeavor.
But perhaps next time, Neumann will say "the first 100 people to send me a pic of you pre-ordering" instead of "anyone who sends me a pic of you pre-ordering".
But I doubt he will walk away from this experiment displeased with its results.
The problem with incumbents.. is they have all this money from being the incumbent...
The startups just don't have the same resources.
How can we convince our politicians (in all sectors) that disruptive startups are a good thing for the economy as a whole, and we should encourage them when the gigantic encumbants have their ear and are whispering the exact opposite to them?
I just don't see how this is any different from a simple cartoon strip.
The funny section is just a "value add" for consumers.. This arrangement doenst seem to be any different from the arrangement on all the other comics in the paper, and I fail to see how this is really going to do anyone any good.
Well, I see the artist doing the video(?) getting his name out, thats a good thing. It's like he's getting a free commercial put out once a month.
For the paper however... The funny pages.. are not a solution to their problem. Exclusivity agreements are not how the papers will save themselves.
This is not a CwF for the paper... nor is it any real RtB.
It looks more like a desperate attempt to stay relevant.. and keep people coming back to their site at least once a month.
/shrug
I don't see the harm in this arrangement.. it's just not groundbreaking by any means. This is more of the same old same old.

Anyone who can't afford the time to rake in effortless 1000$/hr wages does not have a problem making money.
And since that was the entire basis of your rant, it looks to me like you were just trying to poke fun at mikes expense.
Wow, how miserably that failed!

Previously, when I read your ramblings on the Pre, you seemed to make it out as if it were lightyears ahead of the iPhone.
I dismissed your entusiasm as merely a case of gadget infactuation however.
I saw then, and see now, absolutely nothing special about this "me too" offering from Palm.

well.. duh... wtf you think people would submit the content for anyways? so it can go dusty while noone does anything with it?
People WANT their stuff to get featured. it's a thrill for them. Morally non-corrupt people don't care if CNN makes money off it.
If you didnt want your stuff to get used.. why else would you go through the effort of reporting it?
