"When discussing the new strip mine and smelting plant proposed, local government held closed-door meetings with energy and mining company representatives. When this was protested by local environmental and citizen groups they were told 'You little people just go back to your reality TV and let the grown-ups decide what is happening to your backyard. And yes, we have complete assurances no despoiling, poisoning, ripping off or pollution will occur.'"
Don't forget the 30% that goes to Apple - so you're gifting Apple with $300,000 for nothing, really. Certainly money that could be used for better things.
And who was in the Oval Office when this trash all started? Hint: Not the present incumbent, who seems to have learned all the wrong lessons from his predecessor.
So if he wants to 'sell' or give away the DVD or blu-ray box... he can't. If he wants to 'sell' or give away the DVD or blu-ray artwork pack... he can't. If he wants to 'sell' or give away the spare DVD with a blu-ray... he can't. According to you.
If they truly meant what they said, there would be no 'work for hire'. That alone shows that actually they think that artists deserve to be paid like the rest of us.
I think someone is too used to American 'news' media where all sides have to be mentioned. So you can't have a piece about evolution without mentioning creationism (sorry, ID), and you can't have a piece about global climate change without "la la nothing we puny gnats can do can change our world or despoil it in any way, but even if so it doesn't matter because some random deity will Rapture us away first".
Actually, call the US bluff here. It's a pain the the **AA to have to queue through US Embassy security theatre to get a visa that at best last 10 years. Force that on the EU and watch tourism (or business travel) nosedive. Watch Canada relax their entry requirements and earn the benefit...
Actually, he quite regularly says "If we have these, they should work in a fair, transparent, legal and above all ethical way". He says "they should respect existing laws, not abuse them and constantly push for more ridiculous extra laws".
Most people here would only say "abolish collection agencies" when said collection agencies don't actually pay most (if any) of the acts they claim to represent, try and push to get money for the most ridiculous things (oh, I dunno, playing music to horses?), or push ridiculous fees for what is essentially the same thing (internet streaming of over-the-air radio). Oh, wait...
Most people here would love the movie and music industries to be creative, to support new acts, to not constantly churn out stuff for the lowest common denominator, to actually pay people what they are owed without 'Hollywood accounting', and to not believe they have some god-given right to be paid from now until hereafter-minus-a-day for a single act of 'creation'. Is that going to happen? (......)
Of course, reform would be better, but that has as much chance as a US Senator/Congresscritter voting against a pork bill for their state - or turning down a **AA brown envelope.
It says a lot that even in Scotland, a rather football-mad nation, they can't even sell a sizable fraction of the Olympic football tickets for the games played locally - because the Scots know what a joke the whole business is.

You are right - the US has the right to let whoever they want in, or not.
But they also have the right to be treated exactly the same back. That is what the EU's response should have been.
