So in a dark room full of hysterical people blinded by tear gas, you want more people with guns, looking for someone else with a gun. Yes, that would be so much better...
So you're saying that there's absolutely no correlation between the ease with which one can obtain guns and the extraordinary high gun murder rate?
No other first world countries have these kinds of mass shooting with the alarming degree of regularity that the US does. It's naive to think that's not directly related to the obsession with protecting the 2nd Amendment and the ability to get guns so easily.
"I don't see anything new or different here, except that perhaps the internet makes it even more important for artists to just shut up and do nothing, for risk of being called out for their opinions or actions while being human."
The internet makes it even more important for artists treat their fans with respect, for risk of being called out for their opinions or actions.
Nobody owes musicians a living or a fanbase. These must be earned by your actions, and can be lost by your actions.
"There is no wonder that all of the rulings by this judge have been for the defendants."
Of course there's no wonder, because it would've been a travesty of justice for any other decision to have been made. These were not difficult or controversial decisions.
"Like it or not, IP protectionism will only grow in the US as America goes further and further towards having an IP dependent economy."
That sounds like a road to economic ruin, for two obvious reasons. The backlash against IP protectionism has already started and it too will continue to grow in direct response. And any economy that depends on 'imaginary property' in a world where digital data or already infinitely reproducible and physical goods are continually getting easier to copy (e.g. 3D printing) is setting itself up for failure.
"The California Highway Patrol confirms that just the act of turning on the phone or selecting the phone's hands-free text app, like pushing the Siri button or Google apps on Android phones, is enough to warrant flashing lights in your rearview mirror and a $100-plus ticket."
So how does that square with the operation of all these menu-based interfaces like BMW's iDrive? How can these be legal if pushing one button to activate Siri isn't?
"In fact, I think the argument that it's infringement is quite tenable. It certainly isn't frivolous, and I think the take down notice is likely in good faith."
I totally agree that this is a serious matter requiring firm action. Obama's outstanding performance of this song, even in truncated form, has obviously devastated the market for the song, and has simply crushed the original artist's... oops sorry, copyright holder's ability to ever make any more money from it, despite the remote possibility of actually increasing general awareness of it. Income streams will be slashed, legacies destroyed, children's futures jeopardised. Oh the humanity...
"It's hilarious how much you don't respect your anonymous commentators privacy."
Mike still has no idea who you are, and none of the TD readers have any idea who you are, so exactly how was your privacy disrespected?
Are you basically admitting that you're terrified of having your completely anonymous comments connected together and held up against your other completely anonymous comments? Coward indeed...

"He didn't try to score political points or try to make someone else look bad..."
If that's why you think Dan made the song you might as well just quit know, because that would be a spectacularly ignorant position to take. This is a topic Dan feels particularly passionate about, and like a lot of musicians he expresses those feelings in song. It's pretty clear you haven't actually listened to the song's lyrics and comprehended Dan's arguments.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Campbell v Acuff Rose Music
So I guess you've never watched one territorial animal kick another territorial animal's ass and take that territory. Exclusive use my ass. Dumb analogy.
I think that's his whole point. The ridiculousness of having to make a 100yo piece of software work highlights the ridiculousness of both the artist's attitude and the copyright system.
"...the disrespect to artists is an entirely different and reprehensible position."
The disrespect shown by some artists is equally reprehensible position to many people. Artists who are concerned about their "career, legacy, children, and livelihood" (Close's words) should consider that before they act in a manner that alienates potential fans and customers. I'm quite certain his actions will lose him more sales than it will gain.
Respect is deserved simply becaise you produce art, it is earnt based on what you do and say. It goes well beyond just how talented someone is. Close is only going to lose respect with his actions.
"now as for mike failing to respond personally to you, i can't search for instances of that because you happen to be an AC."
And that's exactly why people like this remain unregistered AC's. That last thing they want is for you to be able to track their comments and hold them to something they've said before.
"By violating copyright, he pretty much showed you how much his opinion is really worth."
And the fact that you still see copyright violation as the Terrible Crime here, completely missing the point of Dan deliberately putting his lyrics over that beat, shows how much your opinion is really worth.
"In addition to the straightforward advertising of artists, this also includes crafting the public image of the artist and arranging media exposure of that image through things like photo shoots for Rolling Stone, "unguarded" interviews in the New Yorker and public appearances."
And most people see straight through that fabricated BS and realise it's simply marketing, and is rarely genuine. That is not connecting with fans in a meaningful way.
