Chris Dodd makes me wish I had the laser from the movie Real Genius, you know, the one that could vaporize a human target from space. Of course, if I built one I would be sued by the MPAA.
Not that I would agree with RIM becoming another patent troll, but I have expected it for years. Everything that they have actually produced, in actual usable products, has eventually failed. Their only recourse is to try patent trolling; though, hopefully, they will fail as quickly as the products they have built.
It's more of a nose tweak concept, and getting everyone from social media sites to push it (Hi Mike!). It's nothing more and nothing less than that.
I would like to see the data, that you apparently have found, that proves his music career will not be better in the long run for doing this. Please post your data and/or a link to where said data can be found.
Wait for the week 2 results, where the song completely disappears.
and considering the his country is now forcing ISPs to block access to the site, you may be right; just not for any of your reasoning, or rather lack of reasoning.
"Huh. Not sure what to make of that either. Sorry for hogging the top space, guys >_>
As I see it, this site goes after people who claim rights, when they are not deserved. Hence,
your apology is rejected; because your heartfelt comment was very well deserved.
You would seem a lot smarter and less childish if you only just would post the word "first" on all of Mike's articles. Though posting "first" is stupid and extremely childish, it would be an improvement from where you are now.
"they should be making about the same per unit as they were before, and that's the concept."
Who said they aren't making the same per unit? If they aren't, then they'd be in a good position to sue the heck out of their record label.
"There is no reason they shouldn't be making money still. Less? Perhaps"
Their 1993 album, Jericho, peaked on the billboard charts at #166, and their last two didn't even chart; so that is the most likely culprit in them making less money, ie. they just aren't that popular any more.
- but the money made is not as a result of some crooked get rich welfare scheme, which is what this is all painted to be.
You are correct, the money made is not some crooked welfare scheme; but what Taplin is proposing would be a crooked welfare scheme so that a group that hasn't had a top ten hit since 1975 would earn the same amount of money each year as they did at their peak of popularity.
"Can you explain how linking to an authorized release is piracy? I'm curious."Awesome. And if this AC can actually explain how linking to authorized content=piracy, I will donate $50 to he/she/it's favorite charity. And I am serious AC; if you can actually get me to accept your view I will give money to a charity of your choice. Just convince me. apauld.
So, you have ignored, everything that I wrote. You try to toss unrelated crap into the ether. YOU FAIL.
You try to make it about the Pirate Party; when the actual story is about some DBAG using miscellaneous quotes (like you hope to do) and a segment of the net being fooled.
At this point I can only hope and pray that you have been castrated. apauld.
Mike, a good first step might be to increase the visibility of your Step 2 project on techdirt's pages. Let artists that misunderstand you and techdirt get a better look at the project you support completely; and they might actually have a better understanding of what you and techdirt is all about. Hence they may be less inclined to jump on the band wagon of hate; started because someone else cherry picked some AC comments, without any understanding that those AC's are already on said band wagon. apauld.
Re: Form of speech doesn't mean an event actually occurred.
Actually they have ramped up security, quite a bit. Unfortunately, having a campus spread throughout a large section of the city, it just isn't that easy. Add in recent cutbacks order by our governor... and you can see where they are now. A friend of mine is an IT guy for them, and being he can work from home; they actually told him to do that, just so he could get some work done.
I had to vote your post insightful, and funny; it is certainly both. However in looking at the big picture (which Getty Images will claim to own, even if the have never seen it before), you comment is also scary. Scary because the MPAA will always miss the point; and that is what they have been hired to do.
"What are they trying to do here? Are they trying to get some type of favorable court ruling to set future precedent? There is no way that they think this could get them any payment- there's nothing left. This move has to be costing them money in legal fees"
What I think people forget is that the MPAA are not content creators. The MPAA is a firm, hired by the Hollywood movie execs, to specifically lobby, sue and bully the rest of the world to do their bidding. (So the Hollywood execs do not have to actually 'waste time' with things like thinking about hwo to improve their businesses).
I think the entire world needs to stop trying to address Chris Dodd and the MPAA. That is not to say that we shouldn't try to stop them at every point; but along with pointing out the fallacies that they promote, we should try to educate the common workers in the industry about how the internet could work for their benfit.
We should address the film making unions in this country, and work to teach the union members about new ways their bosses could be selling the product that they (the union members) have created.
If we get the unions to understand the whole "failed business model vs. new media" AND "new business models are often created through new media" this might all get a whole lot easier for those of us in the supporting freedom of the internet crowd.
