I've never once heard this blog call for getting rid of copyright at all. I think you are arguing something that never happened. There are calls to restrict copyright to something a little more reasonable than it currently is and to embrace things like Creative Commons (which also depends on copyright) but not to get rid of it.
This blog supports finding smart new business models that can flourish and thrive by embracing file sharing. I think it can be summed up by saying file sharing isn't going away any time soon, so instead of wasting so much time and money fighting it learn to embrace what it allows and make money. No where does it say get rid of copyright and hope for the best, in fact I can think of a lot of posts that say this is a silly idea.
Copyright bill won't matter if ACTA is passed. Then we'll just have new laws introduced to "comply" with the ACTA. You should be very worried about the ACTA and what it means to Canadian law.
Is this a serious comment? Did you forget your SarcMark?
What would be the problem with removing the "morons with cameras" videos from the site then? They are covered by copyright as much as anything Viacom owns, by your own logic this is horrible and must be stopped at all costs.
Re: You conveniently ignore the fact that section of the constitution did not deal with citizen's rights at all.
You know you just violated the AP's copyright by posting the entire article right? I find it amazing that you are so pro-IP yet you do thing like this all the time.
Re: Re: RSS readers vs. TAM: Case # 23-4524, 9th Circut
I use the RSS reader in Outlook. Check my mail, then check and see if anything interesting popped into the RSS feed during slow times. Why wouldn't you want RSS integrated into a program I am checking all day long every day?
Re: Re: Relevant article on the changing nature of art
What makes Suzanne's post so great?
She is basically talking about all IP being used in a sort of "mash-up" culture in the future. How is that not "pirate logic" by your standards?
You did read what she wrote right? "...sense of rampant collaboration in which every work of art is simply raw material for anyone who decides to put his or her imprint on it..." She is talking about anyone and everyone taking IP and reusing it, remaking it into something else. Isn't that "stealing" and "pirate logic" to you?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "How Monetary Rewards Can Demotivate Creative Works"Perhaps Richard doesn't want to identify himself for the same reason you won't identify yourself.
I was under the impression that notice-and-notice was an improvement over the US style notice-and-takedown. Could you elaborate why you are concerned with this? ISP's keep your personal info anyway I don't really see the big deal with this one. We still have privacy laws in Canada that the ISP's are subject to, they aren't just handing out your info if someone complains about something you put on YouTube, it would take a subpoena to release that info.
True. One of the good points of C-32 is they have separated out commercial and non-commercial infringement. Non-commercial infringement damages go from $100 to $5000 which is a very nice change from the $20,000 for commercial damages. I believe its a step up from the US damages as well, correct me if I am wrong, I believe damages in the US go up to $120,000 per infringement?
The cap on damages makes those extortion style lawsuits a lot less attractive in Canada I'd think. It would be hard to recoup the lawyers fees from a maximum $5000 per infringement award.
So give the people who aren't paying what they want and charge them for it!
"Pirates" are using torrent sites and those torrent sites are making money!! We hear that all the time in the comments, so what is stopping the labels from offering their own tracker with higher quality videos for a price people will pay? Nothing!!
These comments always turn into how people are "stealing" from Big Content and if something isn't done things will stop getting made and the world will probably end. The point Mike is trying to make over and over and over again is that they should be focusing their efforts on servicing their customers in a way they want and they will pay for it!
We get it, copyright infringement = bad. Now come up with a way to compete against "free" already, it really isn't all that hard, Big Media doesn't want to however. Apparently everyone MUST continue to buy shiny disc until they decide otherwise.
Re: With a response like that I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't nameless one's alt or something. Or maybe angry dude is his alt. I've always suspected he is just trolling these comment threads
You've got some pretty sh-tty power then!
Copyright is a moral issue is it? Who's morals are we playing by? Yours? Pirates? How can you tell anyone what is moral and what isn't?
Just sounds like they have a good business model to me. I don't consider an MMO as a form of DRM, you know what you are getting into when you buy it.
Sure you can play it 100% free if you wanted, but the best experience (hence a reason to buy it) comes from Blizzard. Seems to be working for them, no?
This is Mike's site, I'm pretty sure he has access to the server logs and all of the IP's that post here. He doesn't ever "name" any per se but he can see someone posting from the same IP over and over again.
So if you come to the site to make the same complaint over and over using different names or as an "Anonymous Coward" or are just trolling expect Mike to call you on it.
I've never seen Mike call someone out who posts as anonymous when they are actually contributing to the discussion. Just the people who come to troll under different names. You aren't ever really anonymous on the internet, someone on every single site out there can tell what IP you are coming from. So if you really value your anonymity you might want to keep that in mind.
Taking it a little far maybe? Muslims are highly religious, do you want to insult them just for the sake of insulting them? Try a little tolerance (in both directions) maybe?
