There won't be any winners, the legacy companies will still die off, it'll just take a little bit longer.
Would be funny though if Sony uses SOPA to have Universal shut down over copyright infringement... I'm pretty sure they could make something up, not like they actually need evdience, or a court, or judge or even a jury.
Re: Re: Re: How about making the uploader actually responsible?
Google doesn't read email, algorithms scan it for keywords, in your head that may be the same thing but in the real world it is completely different.
What you are suggesting is pointless as Youtube doesn't know what is legitimate, what is fair use and what is infringing. As has been pointed out so many times to you OOTB is that even the content creators and copyright holders haven't a clue what is legal and what isn't.
Re: Not "easy" or "obvious" is a flaw of Youtube premise, NOT copyright.
Youtube will turn over in excess of $1 billion in 2011 it is predicted... no loss to the economy there. That doesn't take into account the savings to the content industry for the free advertising or those who are able to monetise the clips being viewed... but... oops, doesn't fit with "what you believe" so move along OOTB, nothing to see here, FREETARD ALERT!!
Re: The "slippery slope" argument isn't in your favor, even.
OOTB I could answer all the questions you pose with cogent plans and explanations, I could explain how the use of the very technology that the **AA's want to make illegal would save them tens/hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
I could even explain to you why people here are so against SOPA, but it would be pointless because you don't listen to anyone but those that share exactly the same world view as you.
Plenty of "speech" going on at torrent indexing sites and forums, but lets ignore all that, historically laws created for once purpose tend to end being used for other things. So given the broadest definitions in the law maybe it's better to axe it now and save all the agro.
What editorial process is there in algorithms that look at words and try and offer videos that "may" be similar to what you have just watched? or in placing adverts based on keywords?
They aren't actually deciding what to put on the page they are letting the 1's and 0's do it for them.
What really pissed me of about the Entertainment industry is they contribute a very small % of a nations GDP but still manage to get laws passed that favour them... if the Tech industry started getting laws passed based on the % of GDP they create the politicians and law systems would collapse under the weight of requests.
So what about embedding? I can upload a whole tv series, give it some wacky name, bury it deep so no one ever looks at it and then embed those videos onto a website of my creation. People would never go to youtube.com.
I can see the point you are making but why not release it globally and still do the old style promotion, it's a win/win! Everyone can get the album and part of the promotion will have been done for you by the fans before the promo tour bus even arrives.
Or they could be in line with his vehement opposition to laws being passed on behalf of legacy industries who have failed to embrace change and the arrival of the digital era, laws which are written so broadly that they could impact on the very fabric of how the internet was created and stifle freedom of speech and the ideals put forth in the Constitution, ideals supposedly protected by the Supreme Court.
Music and art has been given away since the first caveman smeared blood and ashes on the wall of his cave and used the bones of his latest kill to make noises on fallen tree trunks...
The difference now is that artists, or the people that control them, have spent the last 50 odd years watching people earn obscene amounts of money and they aren't prepared to let that go... the funny thing is that by the time they realise that they've been fighting a losing battle they will have become extinct.

It's a shame that the actual radio programme isn't easily accessible to people outside the UK as you really have to listen to his delusional rant. 17 minutes in when he starts ranting about Apple/iTunes and seems to get them mixed up mentally with recording labels and not a "store" is truly perplexing.
What really got my goat was how it was part one of a series of lectures under the banner of John Peel, a British radio DJ who started out in the US, became a "pirate" radio station DJ before becoming the most respected mainstream DJ on BBC Radio 1, John Peel did more to bring new artists to the masses than any other radio DJ, for his name to be taken and used in a series of lectures only to have Pete "Dinosaur" Townshend rant on about stuff he clearly doesn't understand is just offensive.
lmao... I got 17 minutes in and switched off... he's upset that it isn't the 1980's. Sorry Pete, things change, get with it or go back to one of your million pound mansions... or and stop wearing cravats as you look like a cunt!
and you're a fucking idiot if you think that radio is more important than the internet for getting your music heard these days... ffs, I buy music from Finland from bands that only get played on Finnish radio stations because I downloaded an album via bittorrent and then found that I could get their back catalogue and pay them directly via Paypal.
What year do you think it is? I'll tell you Toto this isn't Kansas and it isn't 198"fuckin"2 that's for sure!!
