I think the BBC is probably one of the gold standards for this (and I know I may be biased in being British). It doesn't shy away from reporting stuff, but it doesn't editorialise it either. The problem with chelleliberty's examples was that actually the second option is the better reporting, unless the media makes it clear what its leanings are, and even then that's not ideal. Fox all too much tends to go for the first type.
It also misses out a third type that seems all too common I believe in American media:
Opposing-sides factual, fake-neutral: "Scientists today identified the degree that the Earth differs from a true sphere using the latest satellite technology. Researchers from the University of the West of America managed to improve the accuracy of their readings until the degree of oblateness is known to 1 part in 10 trillion. Commenting on this refinement, Joe Shmoe of the Flat Earth Lodge of Concerned Humans told reporters 'This is more fakery from the elitist, snobtastic ivory towers that is not only perpetuating myths about the Earth being round but oppressing those who are trying to expose the lies and teach the controversy.' A spokesman from the University of the West of America declined to comment on this response."
There are other types, but I suspect we can leave the National Enquirer and Daily Mail out of it for now.
Or even better, ship them halfway around the world to some useless colony where they can't actually earn enough to pay back their debts, let alone send it back.
Re: Re: Re: Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" Illustrates the Horrors of Big Government
1984 works for any sort of totalitarian society, whether communist, fascist or corporate-controlled. So from that point of view, it's a useful lesson nonetheless. Add to that the other glimpse of human nature, Animal Farm, and you have a pair of very good case studies into how we render others into 'them' tribes and then oppress them, and how we oppress them.
Seriously, good idea. Be interesting to see how it'd work. They'd be worth rewarding just for the chutzpah, even if they fundamentally didn't like the digital age.
Small point: you are mixing up Gregor Mendel, the monk responsible for our theory of genetics, with the rich man's son Charles Darwin, who came up with the first full theory of evolution (along with Alfred Russel Wallace).
I think it's the whiny, unnecessarily insulting way he totally failed to add anything of substance to the debate other than "I think you suck neener neener!"
Re: Re: Re: The content industry wants no law but those that are stop first prove later.
I think you will find that your definition of Fascism also fits a lot of Stalinist/Maoist/Jungist 'communist' settings as well - but given that it's corporate domination by the rich, Fascism works best here. Just the fascists don't have a monopoly on 1% domination tactics...
Whilst the spineless poodles in the British Parliament/legal system are certainly at fault, it still doesn't mitigate the absolute douche-ness of the US in trying to extradite someone for something legal in their own country, and trying to pretend something that is at most a civil matter IN THE US is a criminal one?
How long before someone gets extradited for going to the bookie? Or running a download site...
Expanding on this, only you (and maybe your immediate family) can use this toilet, and only for certain uses (see Plans 1 and 2). Anyone else using it is a 'public performance' and any uses for which it is not expressly designed and licensed for are also expressly forbidden wqithout additional licensing (i.e. disposal of oral and nasal secretions). You may not customise your toilet without the express written permission of the designer/manufacturer's heirs in perpetuity, and you may only use a company-authorised repair service in case of fixing or unblocking. All uses may be subject to government monitoring to make sure your toilet is not being used to 'transport' illegal substances, or any other monitoring as the licenser sees fit, including cameras to ensure correct usage of your toilet.
So how closely like you will be 'your image'? What happens when you look like a relative, or even worse, a non-relative? Will your evil twin have full control over your likeness? Will your parents sue you for 'copying' elements of their likeness when you procreate? If I find an 'image' of you on my toast, does that mean you control if I get to eat my toast or not?
Can I charge the government every time they photograph me for security reasons or with a speed-camera? ;)
Yes because both Hitler and Napoleon thought it would be funky to invade other countries "for the lulz", which of course the modern US Democratic party is so guilty of last decade... except that they didn't.
So, who would you rather compare with Hitler and Napoleon?
