"All of the above being said, I'll buy an iPad anyway because it's my job to be up on this kind of thing. It'll probably also be the first time that I "jailbreak" a device. That's because Apple's closed ecosystem is feeling less and less like an exclusive resort and more like Big Love's Juniper Creek compound.
If the company doesn't figure out this whole Internet thing, soon, they're ultimately destined to go the way of the once-mighty AOL. And if you're itching to retort that Apple really does "get" the cloud, as is clearly evidenced by the amazing MobileMe service, then congratulations—you're now ready to buy yourself some prairie garb and take that second wife you've been eyeing. "
But hey, you might get lucky and a recording star will copy this posting after "deep soul searching of their feelings, and months of intensive research of the facts on the issue."
"What I don't get is, what is the actual billboard for? Is it some cig ad of some sort?"
Check out an old movie called 'Earth Girls Are Easy' Same billboard.
Angelyne basically wanted to be famous for being famous. Like Paris Hilton without Daddy's bucks to back her up. If this lawsuit does anything but drop off the radar, it will be a great illustration for someone wanting the Streisand effect specifically for the boost of publicity.
I think Twitter's yesterday is just smaller than Googles, we still have the lag of someone seeing, texting, and hitting enter. Until we have neural jacks though, that's always going to be the case.
If that person getting 75% is spending most of it on the artist, making deals, buying stuff to sell at concerts, making reservations, paying roadies, hiring webmakers, paying online store fees, then that's a bargain.
If they have a testerosa parked in the driveway of a new house, and you are eating beans in a sleeping bag on the road trying to find blank CD's at the dollar store, then that's a problem.
My Mom was a data punch/data entry/system programmer specialist for NOAA from the early 60's to 1980 or so. The lengthy job title is how her job changed in that time. To begin with she worked with wire encoders, then paper cards, then paper tape, then magnetic cards, then magnetic tape.
She entered weather measurements from hundreds of weather reporting stations from all over the US so that they were recorded for posterity, and studies.
So yah, while '83 may have marked the usage swell for the personal computer, mainframes were well emplaced in commerce and government from the 50's on.
"Huh? Shouldn't the daughter be studying instead of watching either Hulu or TV? (I mean, from the parents' point of view...)"
It's not about what the daughter does or does not do, it's about what the MEDIA could say about the daughter of a BIG TIIIIMMMME TV COMPANY not even wanting to watch TV.
For the rest of us, it's about what we want to do, or not do. For me, TV free since '03.
Since the code in the movie was written in the 50's then by rights, the movie came up with the code first, and is prior art, so the movie should sue Global.
First off Syfy is a channel with monster movies and wrasslin.
Second, there was no device other than a pencil and paper along with a girl having visions, how does that make a process?
If a list of numbers written down is a patent violation, then everyone who's ever played Yahtzee, Keno, or Bingo needs to be put against the wall and shot.
And shoot some of them wrasslers too. Their acting is awful, almost as bad as Nick's fake hair.
Re: As an ebook author, I have to comment on a piece of this...
I suppose then with Baen Books giving away a continuously rotating selection of Electronic books in multiple formats they will suddenly fall over and die, rather than having a continually expanding customer base and minuscule costs that allow them to have the best book payment rates of any publishing house?
Oh wait, no they are not. They are doing quite well and John Ringo just got a new boat. Have fun with them pork and beans. Oh and PAULO COEHLO, you only need to push the button once for it to show up. You might want to hire a 12 year old to explain it to you.

I can redownload a book from Baen or use a CD I made, your 10 year old book is out of print. No method is perfect, but I can have redundancies.
What about Scott Kurtz of PvP, folks signed up for a minimum of 5 months for access to his private thoughts and feelings, and they got for their money like 4 posts about how he was too busy to make a good post. It's like a for pay live journal. "Oh woe is me to have to live in the hell of Eiderdown Court in a clean subdivision...."
I'm going to reserve judgment on this until I see where Lily Allen weighs in on this issue. I am sure she will have totally new and well reasoned view on this.

It's not unique to artists by any means.
