When I retired I had no real use for a cell phone except for emergencies. I dumped AT&T and bought a TracPhone. The phone cost me $20 and there is no contract time. This included double minutes for as long as I have it. I pay for a year what AT&T's minimum plan cost for less than 2 months. Texting is included. ALL minutes are rolled over with no limit. I buy maximum time with the fewest minutes and right now I could talk 24/7 for 2 weeks with what I have accumulated. Why anyone would use anyone else I do not know.
Just because no one has the balls to enforce to enforce it does not remove penalty of perjury from the claim they make. So many politicians are bought and paid for by the MPAA & RIAA that they can lie with impunity. I sign my tax return under the same conditions and if I have falsified anything you can damn sure bet they would prosecute me if they caught me.
Don't DMCA takedown notices require that the party submitting them is under penalty of perjury? If I were to take the stand in any court and be caught lying I would be facing prison time. It's time we lock some people up and others would start being more careful about the accuracy of what they file. Keyword searches without any accuracy checks should be illegal.
I remember reading about an artist that received a notice that she had to remove one of her works from her web site. After much time and red tape it was discovered that the reason was that she had simply titled the painting as the date she completed it. Because some movie had been released om that date some ridiculous automated search kicked it out.
I'm no conspiracy theorist but one thing I'm pretty sure of is that they lied to us about the Kennedy assignation. Not saying I think they were involved but I haven't really fully believed anything our government has said since. I don't think North Korea pulled the Sony hack but either they are too stupid to figure this out or they just found blaming them was convenient propaganda. Horses, not zebras: disgruntled Sony employee.
The government is always looking for reason to take action against naughty countries. Easy to make them the bad guys. Bush was looking for an excuse to finish his daddy's war. Since we couldn't link Iraq directly to the 9/11 attacks they made up the weapons of mass destruction bullshit with very little evidence. Too bad a lot of good men had to die for their lies. We probably lost our chance to get Osama bin Laden while he was still in Afghanistan. A few more phony excuses and we will be invading north Korea.
I suppose as with any big company quality of service can depend on location. Speeds could vary depending on location and distance from the source. Could even have something to do with the previous infrastructure and management when Cox bought out Cablevision here. All I know is my speed is more than sufficient for HD streaming and customer service has always been pretty good for me. Outages are rare and they fix them pretty fast. The only speed problems I have ever had turned out to be because of a coax I put in myself. I'm sure that if some real competition like Google fiber came here they would be forced to up their game but considering the only other choice here is that shitty AT&T, I think they are doing alright. I had them years ago and trust me, they are so bad that you can't even consider them competition. When I used to call their customer service I could spend an hour on hold and shuffled from one rep to another only to be finally told I would have to hang up and call a different number.
I don't know a lot about the technical aspects of it but my son does. He says that the speed is what it is supposed to be. When I went to the unlimited plan I had to go to a slower speed but it is still faster that my wireless so I notice no difference. I suppose they do that so one person can't share one account with an entire apartment building.
Cox mail does not have IMAP but who needs it? Gmail is free. I can see my spam folder and it is not often that they put something in it that doesn't belong there.
When I call customer service they give the option to speak or push keys and you can skip through the menu as soon as you hear the choice you want. If you already know the options you can get where you want in just a few seconds. I can't say I have ever had a representative who wasn't courteous and helpful. If they do not know they answer to your question they will connect you to someone who does.
My new plan did not include TV but I didn't care because I rarely used it. They did forget to turn it off but I'm not being charged for it. They haven't announced any plans to end analog but I suppose eventually all providers probably will. Analog looks lousy on an HD TV anyway.
No company is perfect but from everything I have read about other providers it looks like Cox is better than most.
I don't know why Cox was rated as low as it is. I have had them for years and have been pretty happy with them. Sure, like any business with limited competition the price is too high but as far as service goes I have no problem. They nearly always can come out by the next day and if they don't show up when they promise I get a discount on the next bill. When there is an area outage it is rarely more than a couple hours until I'm back up. In the last year that has only happened maybe 2 or 3 times. I get the speeds that I am supposed to. When I had my unlimited plan installed it was not only free but they gave me (not a lease) a new modem and rerouted my phone line at no charge. A couple times when I was a few days late I called and got the fee waived. My payment is locked in for 3 years on the plan I am on. I'm always reading horror stories about other providers but I guess I have been lucky that Cox hasn't pulled that kind of crap.
Sony: Let's chase down all the horses after we left the barn door open!
Sony is just flailing wildly trying to stop all the information about their embarrassing and even illegal behavior. Even if they could force Twitter and a few others to remove posts they are still facing an impossible battle. Are there still people who actually believe that once something newsworthy is on the internet it is not permanent? Apparently a company so clueless that they put all the passwords on a folder called passwords are. It's like the idiots that try to use the "right to be forgotten" and find that little known information about them goes viral.
Terrorist organizations were cautious in their communications long before the Snowden leaks. Bin Laden did not even have an internet connection at his compound. Instead of monitoring actual suspects closely the 3 letter agencies are buried under huge haystacks looking for needles while constantly adding more hay. The Boston bombers were know to have terrorist ties and had even been brought in for questioning. If they had been targeted for investigation perhaps a tragedy could have been prevented. Until the government realizes that wasting time and spending billions trying to collect it all just to catch one taxi driver sending a few thousand dollars to Somalia, terrorists will continue to avoid serious investigations.
I heard that licensing companies in the US were wanting to be paid for truck drivers listening to the radio while they drive because it was a workplace. Anybody know how that turned out? When I was a kid the record companies realized that airplay=sales and they paid the DJs to play their songs in what was called the payola scandal. While that in itself wasn't ethical, when did these greedy bastards forget that exposure means more money for them in increased album and concert ticket sales. Now they are going to make pre-1972 music so difficult to license that many will just stop playing it. That will really help them find new fans for artists that haven't been on the charts for over 40 years.
When I was in school I can remember fire drills were scheduled and when the alarm went off everyone was calmly led to designated areas. There were blockades set up differently each time to practice alternate routes out of the building. No one had to be traumatized and we knew exactly what to do should there ever be a real emergency. I don't think we would have been better prepared if suddenly smoke bombs were set off in the hallways and a dozen fire trucks pulled up with sirens blazing. The idiots that planned this should face criminal charges. Free speech does not give you the right to shout fire in a crowded theater.
Those kids are at many hundred if not thousands times as likely to be injured or killed in a car or bus accident going to or from the school. This was a terrorist act and all involved should be charged accordingly.
I keep reading articles about how terrible Comcast, Verizon AT&T and others are. One ISP I don't often see mentioned is Cox. I have had them for years and for the most part I have been very satisfied with them. I can usually get a technician out here by the next day and they guarantee they will show up when they say they they will. If they don't you will get a credit on your bill. When there is an complete outage they usually get it back up within a couple of hours. I get the speeds that my plan promises most of the time. On a few occasions I have called to dispute a charge and every time they were quick to correct it. I have cancelled and changed parts of my service and the representatives were always cooperative and polite with me. I was able to get an unlimited plan at a very reasonable price with the only condition that I switch my phone provider. They saved me money over what I was paying to AT&T. I am just curious if others of you that have Cox are as satisfied with them as I am.
That's like trying to extinguish a fire by throwing gasoline on it. These idiots just don't get it. Would they be able to name the team The Washington Niggers? Redskins is just as offensive to native Americans as that word is to blacks.
How many billions of clicks and billions of euros paid to advertisers in Germany does it take to for them to realize that Google is a pretty sweet deal for them and they deserve to make their share of the money? Google should completely shut down all services to any country that gives them crap in the future.
No, they are big because they are a company that continuously innovates. They have brilliant people that have never been satisfied and work to improve their products and research new ones. Only a few years back I never supposed that when I planned a trip to the east side of the city, instead of getting lost like I usually do I could click street view and virtually drive down the streets to where I was going. I can see 360 to make note of signs and buildings right up to my destination. A company that provides valuable services that people want deserves to reap the rewards. If the others can't keep up that is their problem.
Re: Last I checked "suspect" means a POTENTIAL criminal.
There can be degrees of certainty about the guilt of a suspect. Sure, even you or I could technically be a potential suspect but with zero evidence it is extremely unlikely we would be investigated. It sounds like they were already certain they were on exactly the right track and they just needed one last piece to identify him. They could have potentially been looking at another Oklahoma City here. If you had a kid attending that school would you be so quick to condemn what they did? Columbine could have been many times worse had the propane bombs not failed to detonate. If 100 kids died in a school bombing would you have been so glad if the FBI did not potentially violate anyone's rights? I think the government is wrong in many of their tactics so much of the time but in this one case they did what needed to be done when they were facing a real possibility of a major terrorist attack. Can you suggest another way they could have quickly identified the suspect without pushing any possible legal boundaries? Police are allowed to use deception to identify or incriminate a suspect. At trial it up to the defense to determine if rights were violated.
I'm not even beginning to defend all the mistakes and abuses that do happen. It does appear that in this one situation that this guy was a already strong suspect. They did arrest the right person. They has no reason to not believe that the threats may be credible and kids could die. Couldn't that fall under the category of exigent circumstances"? If the police arrive at a scene and they hear gunfire or someone screaming for help they don't need a warrant to kick in the door.
