At the very least this can be a comprehensive experiment on how listening to big, incumbent companies can lock your services in the technological middle ages.
"All that is necessary for evil to prevail is to have a few crybabies like you that cannot take responsibility for their apathy."
I don't recall saying we should not take responsibility. I'm doing what I can by supporting initiatives that aim to change this status quo. I'm doing what I can by spreading knowledge of these crony ways of our Governments.
"If the voting process is not working for us, then we have to do something... sitting around and whining about it without our cheese is pointless."
I'm all ears. Discussing, talking about it, "whining" if you will is part of what can be done to reach critical mass and change the tides. There are plenty of attempts all around from Greens to Pirates, from peaceful protests to full blown civil wars, from pure capitalist to hybrids that try to blend in what socialism has to offer without going full blown communism that has already failed even before capitalism showed it's heading to the same place. Saying every nation gets the govt it deserves is missing the point by light years.
Yes and all the subsequent seeds produced are theirs as well, right? Sounds awesome. You have a round up ready problem in your own land already. Of course I wouldn't dream in changing your mind if you can't find even a small discomforting part in their behavior. Carry on, nothing to see here.
I think Backpage is actually calling attention to the censorship problem and maybe it won't really close the adult ads section. Still, if this is permanent I wouldn't blame them. Along with constant attacks against the site itself the owners are being 'legally harassed' by lawsuit after lawsuit against them individually. If this isn't abusing the law just because you don't agree with a perfect legal situation then I don't know what it is. They should be receiving a hefty amount of money for all the bullying they've been through.
And again an issue that should be dealt with by recognizing there is demand and providing legal backup for those who want to engage in it (sex workers and their clients) is instead being pushed further into the shadows facilitating the parts that are really problematic (sex trafficking). Because it worked with drugs. Horray?
This is precisely the type of clueless, bigoted ideas we don't need. If people had full control and the vote meant something then I could agree with you but elections are merely spectacles where the power (mainly the huge corporations and mega-rich people) pulls the strings.
Slution: all cases where such unreliable tests were decisive to secure convictions should be overturned, records wiped clean from them and people in jail released with proper compensation depending on how many years they spent under arrest.
Make it hurt badly, financially and then maybe things will actually change. Of course chances of this happening are close to 0.
Orwell would be shocked if he found out he was being prophetic. It should be an interesting experiment thoguh, to see how much impact a ban of the top players in these fields will have.
I've dug through the filling and frankly the case seems weaker than Gawker. The lawyers conveniently left out tons of evidence TD presented at the time to make the basis of the arguments.
I'm going to repeat what Norton said at Ars:
I hope this will finally be the straw that breaks the congame this guy has been running for the last 37 years.
There are plenty of people willing to help if TD decides to crowdfund the defense me included.
Remember how they kept treating information from public leaks (Snowden anyone?) as classified even if everybody else had already read it all? Well. This would explain why they aren't revealing these details.
So it could be stupidity. Or it could be the Govt not used to people questioning them and willing to take the "trust us" route that worked in the past. Or downright totalitarian impulses. Or it could be a comic albeit tragic mixture of all.
"If these redactions are challenged, the FBI is going to have a fun time explaining why it couldn't even release the price of exploit, much less large chucks of the standard contractual language it deploys when working with private companies -- whether they're cracking open iPhones or supplying toner cartridges."
Because TERRORISTS! FAKE NEWS! RUSSIA! - will probably be the answer.
I was thinking about it. Was it a single picture? Was it saved in a collection or in the download folder? Was it a cache pic? Is there enough trust that the employee didn't plant the evidence to make a few bucks?
I wouldn't say this is Stasi 2.0. Yet. It's the framework being put in place.
And this is why, ladies and gentleman, you encrypt anything you don't want snooped. I was honestly shocked when I needed to ask for maintenance under warranty and the tech person asked for my password. I was like, what? Make it turn on and then if you need to check the configurations you'll do while I'm looking. Sure this guy may have had CP on his machine but it could be pictures of his family, pictures of him and his girl in the nudes etc.

Fixed.
Then people who think the world should fit their narrow, petty view of it decided to bully the service out of existence.

No really, at some point the bill is going to come down and we will make the companies pay.
