Depends on your definition of punish. I had a friend falsely accused of malicious mischief on the slimmest of evidence, he turned himself in rather than be arrested & was held for a bond hearing. That resulted in him requiring a $300 bail, which couldn't be paid where he was held, and required a trip to the county seat, then a return trip to the jail with a paper to release. Then a court appearance to get the whole thing straightened out. The final outcome was a complete exoneration with records expunged, but I would consider that life interruption, a punishment. fortunately he had friends who were willing to blow off a day to get him out.
I was a Canon advocate, at one time, their approach just made sense. When others were including a print head on each new cartridge, Canon offered ink tanks. I'm totally disillusioned, though, their approach was all hype. A replacement print head, if you could find one, cost 1/2 to 3/4 the price of a printer, the ink tanks became less and less dependable. The new ones with the chip on them were the last straw, I threw my Pixma in the dumpster and bought HP. I'm glad my money won't be fueling this.
Not to mention the fact the lack of motivation while they are working. I'm not attacking the troops, the carriers work hard. They have been time studied until the don't have time to pick their noses. Go inside some post offices and it is another story, people just up and go on break with 20 people in line, clusters of management shooting the breeze.
So far no one has collected a penny from these failed attempts, and likely have lost revenue as the affiliates will do less business in the state, maybe even shut down completely. If the latter is the case they lose big time trading taxpayers for unemployment recipients. Not to mention all the sales tax they lose as these former wage earners go on the poverty plan to survive.
Why would some forms of nudity be ok while others not? So long as appropriate labels are provided & over 18 agreements are enforced as much as an honor system can be, let it all happen. There is some in such poor taste that I won't watch it, but someone would, or it wouldn't be there.
They have been reflashing, replacing, & piggy backing chips ever since cars have had them. It might be just as well that the dumb ones can't find the way in though.
"But, the biggest Toyota recalls this year were still mechanical in nature: the floor mats and gas pedals, neither of which are remotely affected by any software in the car."
I beg to differ, neither the floor mat nor the pedal is to blame for this and it will come out soon. The problem is in the software, hardware or wires, & they are still pursuing a mechanical fix. I saw a demo on TV last night where they set it off by crossing a couple of wires, & it threw no codes in the computer. They have a much bigger problem than a sticky pedal.
Some popular Author could at the end of his or her contract decide not to renew with the publisher. They could then self publish in E-book and / or audio book only.
The overall profits would be less, but with fewer hands in the pie, the authors share should be greater.
If someone decides to run with this, & do the Audio books please hire one of the great female voices out there, I've seldom heard a great male narrator. The absolute best is; one of each (Male and Female) in which case it becomes more like a radio play.
I never thought of it that way, and you're right, that is a problem.
The only solution that comes to mind is; do like some toll road authorities do for toll tags and; set up an account with perhaps $25 in it, the draw against that until the balance gets low at which point they let you know, so you can put more money in the account. That way there is only a fee for every $25 or $50 or what ever amount you chose, and you could be offered a much better price for going along with the program.
If the music industry didn't want such total control, and would let the market set the price, the sales of digital music would go through the roof. $1 per song doesn't seem unreasonable for one song, but start building albums or filling a 10 gig player, and it is an unreasonably high price.
Had the movie studios rode the wave of the incoming technology, I'd probably have the hardware to take full advantage of it. Since they went with the circle the wagons approach, I now have hardware to use AVI / Xvid & now couldn't be bothered to stream anything. I love my present setup and can't imagine anything being better, except perhaps the remote could be made to work on brain waves, so I didn't have to click to see the next show.
OT: Dr Strange; The drug war is a colossal failure, and I am in favor of just allowing it all. The clumsy will go first, so soon the heroin users would all be dead, due to unlimited supply. Problem solved. The lesser drugs would hit about the same levels they now occupy, but the costs associated with prosecuting and housing the users would go away. Drug crime should go down as the cost of feeding a habit would be low enough to maintain with a job at 7-11.
"There's simply no point in even having a government, is there?"
As a potential Anarchist, I'd say no.
Under Anarchy if someone become too greedy, just bust a cap in his ass, problem solved.
