The promoters of the directive know that it's impopular, but need to trick their fellow MEPs to vote it anyway by downplaying the risks. So they try to get their votes before it's too late...
I think it makes sense for fees to grow over time for a patent. The fact that patents get discarded is a feature.
«It costs 900 yuan ($131) a year to own an invention patent, a price that rises to as much as 8,000 yuan later in its life. For the other categories, tolls rise from 600 yuan to 2,000 yuan annually in the last two years.»
Re: The law is meant for OUR use, not to be used AGAINST us!
It's truly shameful that Congress has not been diligent enough to spell it out clearly that copyright exists solely to increase shareholder value. Someone might now get the unamerican and communist impression that they're entitled to redistribution of profits to actual humans.
Is there any way Disney can actually lose in this case? If the copyright holder's case is asserted, Disney can use its vast rights inventory even more aggressively. If fair use is asserted, Disney can use its vast TV and broadcasting networks to exploit other people's works without shame.
Hardly unprecedented. The Italian Ministry of culture sued a company (Stoneage S.r.l.) for producing a *drawing* of a half-hidden skull fossil. It took the supreme court to reject such a bizarre claim: Cass. civ. Sez. VI - 1 Ordinanza, 23-04-2013, n. 9757 (rv. 626365), based on the sad state of pseudo-copyright laws on cultural heritage in Italy: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Italian_cultural_heritage_on_the_Wikimedia_projects
Who is going to profit from this pact with the devil? Who has deceived researchers for twenty years only in order to reap huge profits? There is very little information online on Social Science Electronic Publishing, Inc.

The costs in USA seem much lower, no wonder there's no incentive in discarding patents once you've got them in:
