Plus, although the plaintiff should have evidence that the comments are untrue (leaving aside proving negatives) the defendant should have a similar level of proof.
After all, if you don't have sources and evidence to back up your statements you would be well advised to word your comments appropriately.
It seems that the second method is the same as the first method, but taken to extremes. The operation in (1) of breaking a number into it's component digits and their power of 10 is the key concept.
Depending on the numbers involved and how comfortable you are doing mental arithmetic, there would be more levels you could break them down until you get to a set of sums that are in the 10 times tables.
One thing I think is important is to teach children reasonableness checks. After all, because of calculators you rarely have to do big multiplications in your head (or even on paper). However it is useful to know if you've got the right answer. For example you could mistype and get 63*24 = 1,512.
However if you were taught to check for reasonableness you might say that 36*24 is just less than 36*25, which is 36*100/4 or 9*100 so you should get a number just less than 900 - so your calculation was obviously wrong. Of course there are many ways to check for reasonabless, the way I do it is to round numbers so that they are easier to multiply (I didn't round the 36 since it's divisible by 4 and that helps when multiplying by 25)
It's rarely about people just wanting stuff for free. It's often about the restrictions or the convenience of things.
Definitely - for a massive example of price v convenience, you only have to look at Apple (particularly their iPods, iPhones and iPads).
You can easily find cheaper products than Apple, and often with more functionality ... but the Apple user interface is so very well designed that they sell like the proverbial hot cakes
Another comparison is eBay. They tried to force everyone to use their own inhouse payment system a few years back, and that didn't go down too well ...
I think his comment at the end should be reworded to refer to *journalism* rather than newspapers.
After all, what he's decrying is investigative work - he's just trying to conflate that with his employer, who presumably he counts as a real newspaper since they charge.

1) 36*24 = 36*20 + 36*4 = 720 + 144
2) 36*24 = 36*20 + 36*4
= 30*20+6*20 + 30*4+6*4
= 600+120 + 120+24
