The Toronto mayor does drugs and is apparently an amiable, relatively harmless loon. The Peoria dimbulb is petty tyrant (pick your favorite tyrant if you want a name), drunk on his perceived power and thus much more dangerous.
Every device I have seen has a default password to allow the initial setup of the device. Some enforce changing the default password to something else during the initial setup. Even if they do not require changing the defaults one should as a matter of good practice. Some of the blame goes to whoever "installed" the equipment and failed to reset the passwords.
Another reason the Internet lessens the impact of serial killers or stories like this is most people are not interested in them. On the Internet one can follow news topics of personal and professional interest in more depth than the regular media normally does.
Most of the publicity about crime stories is media hype. Rarely do the stories impact the viewers/readers lives in any meaningful way. To pick a city, Chicago, just about any murder in Chicago will likely have no affect on me - I do not live in the Chicago area. But if there is a murder that the media latches onto I will know more about it than I really care or need to know.
Snowden showed many nominally democratic countries are really borderline police states with the US leading. Most of what was exposed was the lack of transparency, competence, and honesty by the leaders particularly in the US government.
This makes sense for many reasons as noted by others. But there is one intangible that Tesla has gotten by this - lots of good will. They also challenging others to follow their lead.
Listen carefully. Obama, et. al. talk about "assault weapons" being in the public's hands. The correct definition of an assault rifle is a rifle capable of either burst or full automatic fire and uses an intermediate size round between a pistol and full rifle round. Burst/automatic fire weapons have for practical purposes been illegal to own in the US since the 1930's which actually predates the development of the assault rifle by about 10 years. In the 1920's and early 1930's submachine guns and automatic rifles were sold to the public and often were used by bootleggers and criminals. The Thompson submachine gun was nicknamed the "Chicago Typewriter" and Bonny and Clyde used BARs (Browning Automatic Rifle). If someone is willing to be very sloppy about their terminology you should worry about their agenda.
The effective range of guns from shortest to longest is: pistols (~50m), assault rifle (~400m), and conventional bolt action deer rifle (~1000m). The range of the assault rifle is deliberate based on the typical ranges for combat.

The owner took what is a normally a no-win situation and converted it into a positive. I have no idea if the place is any good (I do not live near it so I truly do not know) but the effort shown generated a lot of good will.
Negative reviews are not always bad. They can point out problems, if the reviewer went beyond the generic complaint. Or they can point out to others issues others need to consider.
The books being scanned are not public domain. The issue hinged on whether the scanning and searching would be allowed under "Fair Use". The court ruled what was being done met "Fair Use".
There is an implied issue that many books are out of print and not public domain. These orphans could be permanently lost with time as the physical copies are thrown out, lost, destroyed, etc.
Wiil understands the conventional movie/tv/video model must change to accommodate what potential viewers are doing. Producers and distributors must understand some do not watch cable tv, do not have the package that includes the channel they are on, want to stream it from the Internet, and some would buy a copy (download or physical). Put versions in each channel at the time of first release/airing and most torrenting disappears.
I happened to see his show (on SyFy channel) and enjoyed.
"Controversial reading" is a convenient buzz phrase for censorship because someone with an IQ less than a rock's got offend. Questioning authority is based on the premise that essentially there are two groups of people in authority: those who hold it by position and those whe hold it by merit. Those by position are scared of questioning because they did not earn their position. The few who earned their authority by merit are usually less threatened by questioning because they have genuine credibility. Note being elected to a political office gives one positional authority not earned authority.
I see one huge advantage to cursive based on the links above:learning to digest material while taking notes. Learning to express ideas in your own words is very critical to understanding any subject. Another benefit is the fine motor skills that good penmanship requires especially when writing with a fountain pen.

4) if the work is older than 15 years; public domain now.
5) if the work's copyright was never registered; public domain now.
The last requirement means creators must register the work with the LOC for there to be a valid copyright.
