I would agree that analog to digital analogies are often clumsy, but the article is about how businesses react to their model being disrupted.
As for how to deal with a competitor undercutting a business, that is just basic economics and happens all the time. Abundance of a product or service naturally drives the price toward zero. Businesses deal with undercutting generally by providing a superior product or service or by differentiating their product or service.
Bitching about free waffles is just being a greedy asshat. All the vendors had to do was wait for the free supply to be exhausted. Free doesn't work well with finite supply.
"...Viral Peace’s creator, tells Danger Room he wants to use “logic, humor, satire, [and] religious arguments, not just to confront [extremists], but to undermine and demoralize them."
Ummmm logic, humor, satire. These are not the tools of trolls.
Well corporations are people now, so I guess that if the corporation is convicted of criminal activity then EVERYONE employed by the corporation goes to jail or pays the fine.
It's an election year. That means the funds that big pharma would normally spend to pay off judges has been diverted to presidential campaign funds. Lacking proper payment, good judgement kicked in.
"The US economy's reliance on IP is only growing, and it's incredibly naive to think that the government will not get involved to protect it's economic interests."
Could you please provide some evidence to support such a statement. We know that it is an opinion of the pro-IP crowd, but if you carve out the portion of the economy that actually relies on IP, is it really that large AND in need of protection?
Thanks for the article. I have no idea who Chuck Close is, nor do I know anything about his art. I do know from his own words that he is a pompous entitled assclown, so I won't be googling his name or looking into his art.
Articles like this always make be laugh. They talk about the death of culture because things are free. Movies, music, literature, but they always seem to leave out PORN.
Pornography is a pretty large industry, its got to be at least 75% the size of the music industry, but no one likes to group that industry with their precious content. Why?
Ok let's stop acting like we are surprised whenever we read articles like this. Let's make it simple. EVERY government in the world would like to censor the internet.
Easy access and free flow of information directly oppose the things that our rulers would like to keep hidden. The internet is disrupting the political business model and so naturally the politicians are going to fight back with every tool at their disposal.
Laws will be written to
1. protect the children
2. stop the terrorists
3. protect jobs
4. protect the economy
5. protect minorities
6. protect morality ( love that one )
They need to write those laws to stop the internet from disrupting their business model.
The taxi business has been corrupt for as long as I can remember. The reason it's hard to disrupt is because of all the local political corruption involved. The funny thing about it is that the politicians feel so safe about this level of corruption that they feel free to say blatantly stupid things.
For any politician to say they are legislating higher fees to ensure a premium class of service is just complete bullshit. They could have left that phrase out and just said they need a legal barrier to entrance into the market.
I think the real story here is the sting operation that was done to scare the potential workforce from working with Uber. They even planned the sting so that it would force the driver to lose an extra day of income. These are the people who say they are concerned about our economy and welfare. Nice.
"What happens if the entire case falls apart? The US government then will have destroyed what turned out to be a legitimate business on no basis. This way, Hollywood gets to be happy, because the US government took out (at its own expense) a service they hated (but which many artists loved)."
I don't think destroyed would be the best way to put it. Mega was a very popular service and if it were to come back, I don't think it would take long for it's traffic to return. Hollywood would not get to be happy. Even if Mega is declared to be a legitimate business, the reality is that the bulk of its popularity is due to the amount of infringing content that it makes available, but that is a cultural issue that needs to be resolved.
Laws are designed to be changed over time to deal with our evolving society. In the past century that has benefited the content industry, but doesn't mean that it has to continue in that direction.
Prohibition is often used as an example of the law being changed to reflect the will of the citizens. An example of the government creating legislation to support a failing business model can be found in the Fugitive Slave Acts of 1793 and 1850. Just because something is against the law now does not make it morally correct.
If the IP section is taken out of CETA and TPP doesn't work out, that doesn't mean that the MPAA/RIAA will just give up. We will be seeing this IP agenda pushed until it makes it into a treaty or national laws OR the people begin aggressively voting these muppets out of office.
"I'm not suggesting Louis C.K. has any particular desire or reason to do this with Louie right now—it's my understanding that FX has been extremely supportive and treated him really well."
The only real reason for Louie CK to DIY the show would be to make more money for himself. FX doesn't treat him well because they are just all around nice and love his company. They are parasites that offer him convenience. All Louis CK is proving to the world is that people do want to pay artists, they just don't give a shit about gatekeepers.

Where are they?
Clearly the DOJ is trying to make exceptions to the law, so why can't we the people make our own exceptions to copyright law?
I promise to only infringe for personal use and not distribute the media.
