Re: Re: Re: Perhaps a tad over concerned about the UK one
Most of that is either land rental and income (Prince Charles is also the Duke of Cornwall. The products made from the farms he owns had their own brand (Duchy Oroginals) and were available for sale in the chain stores like Tesco. The brand "Duchy Originals" is now owned by high-end supermarket Waitrose) or gifts from foreign dignitaries.
Other income is from the Civil List, which is funded by our taxes. It's basically their salary for working foreign dignitaries and keeping the public happy by visiting them in their towns, etc., or at special events. They also make money by shilling their various palaces, etc. (complete with gift shops), to tourists.
Re: Re: Re: So, how's that decision working out for you?
I daresay the Black representatives were afraid of reprisals if they voted against it. It's unlikely that they were in favour of slavery — or the Jim Crow Laws that followed the end of the Civil War.
I'd be interested to see their other voting records.
The concept of original sin is not in the Bible. It's a Catholic thing.
You're right about Blue et al, though. They really do treat it as a religion.
Fun fact: back in the day in my native Ireland, a row erupted between two monasteries over copying religious texts. If it wasn't for the pesky Germans, the availability of the Bible would have been very restricted.
So it seems we've always had maximalist hoarders who would rather have cultural artifacts perish than fall into the hands of the hoi polloi; they were as much of a pain in the neck then as they are now. The good news is we've also always had pirates to ensure that they exist for our enjoyment today.
The say they are, and actual conservatives aren't calling them on it. Remember when they threw the Birchers out? That doesn't happen any more. They've embraced them.
Eh, I'm seeing it in the radical Marxist Twitterati today. They're currently pretending that Hong Kong is a non-issue being stoked by the evil Western powers and that all the stories we're hearing about the mistreatment of the Uighurs is anti-Chinese propaganda. They're also pretending the Chinese regime is communist when it abandoned actual communism years ago on account of it being a dangerous nonsense when put into practice.
Guys! When a rich powerful man can do whatever he wants, then pay to make it go away, none of that is okay.
Those women who accept the payments do so in order to be able to move on with their lives knowing that the rich and powerful can make their lives a misery if they don't.
Trump can't tell the truth to save his life and demonstrably lies - straight out - half a dozen times a day and the same republicans calling for Clinton's impeachment are silent as the grave.
When they're not busting a gut to defend him. Lindsey Graham has a thick coat of boot polish on his tongue these days. Ugh!
Boycotting is a perfectly legitimate way to express your displeasure. I won't read any newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch, and avoid doing anything that might enrich him further. Most lefties would agree with me on principle because he's a horrible man. I also slag him and his collection of rancid rags off as and when the subject arises.
If every left-wing/progressive wants to boycott Chick-Fil-A because they think the company is run by horrible people, let them. I can understand people wanting to protect their interests and wouldn't criticise them for doing so.
only one group is trying to actively hurt an entire segment of the population.
People of faith are being clobbered because we're not a protected group. I'm sorry for your troubles and agree that it's no fun being a target. I've been one myself and can sympathise. I don't think it's right to bash any group of people and make their lives a misery. I daresay you'd say the same thing, but at that point terms and conditions apply. Anyone we believe to be actively harmful to vulnerable people tends to be put on the unwritten list of people we won't bother protecting, e.g. white supremacists.
Unfortunately, deciding who deserves to be put in a protected class is subject to the prevailing fashions of the day. It's currently fashionable to bash people of faith, radical feminists (who annoy me too, as it happens. I hate cruelty), and people who pick a side in the culture wars, depending on who's in the majority/minority.
I often vote your comments insightful, Stephen, but today I think you're calling it wrong; the story is much bigger than your own experiences.
Agreed in full. "Rugged individualism" works best if you live on an island by yourself. In areas where people live in proximity to each other and have to share resources, a communitarian model works better than a competitive one where the rich rule the roost and the rest of us struggle to meet the most basic needs.
India can't call itself socialist until they finally bury the last remnants of the caste system and start doing something about their vast proportion of poverty-stricken citizens.
India has sold its soul to fascism. Don't get me started on Kashmir and its Hindu-first policies.

That will never happen. The Tories will see to that. Why? Those people donate to the Tory party.
