in the future? the future is now mate. The days and weeks after demonoid went down saw dozens and dozens of people who'd never uploaded a torrent in their lives, suddenly joining new communities and uploading their libraries.
To ensure that it wasn't lost. To ensure that anyone who wants a book can find a book. I'm a bibliophile, and happened to be in the right place at the right time to watch it happening, but i'm quite certain the same thing plays out every time a community gets disrupted.
All they've done is create a few more people that have gone from ignoring their business model, to detesting it, and being willing to fight against it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "When do we finally put those two bogus assumptions to rest?"
umm..all the new books are comic books. and cory doctorow and john scalzi are pretty far from low end.
Also, you could have found the book bundle on any torrent site, using far less time and energy than you've spent in the comments section just of this article.
i'd read pretty much every book in it for free.. Pirate cinema i actually got directly from cory doctorow's craphound site, as i have for nearly all his books.
i still bought it, because it was a chance to give directly to the authors whose work i enjoy. I won't pay a gatekeeper, but a couple bucks for an artist whose work i like? sure.
don't hold your breath. actually. on second thought, please do. You just keep holding your breath until the clock rolls back to 19985, and all these damned computers go away.
Re: Re: I doubt you're ever going to understand that
i have a book a day habit. when i wanted books to own, they come from used book stores. new books came from the library.
nowhere in that was the author, who i loved, making any money off of me. Now i get them in ebook, and there isn't exactly a used digital goods market to be found. So i'm going to pirate them. i'd much rather give a buck or two straight to an author i like. but that option isn't available. Remember, i don't buy new books. i'm not a lost sale, i never was a sale...but i could have been.
no, we don't need to understand their mindset. we just laugh at them, then pirate it for free. because it's a click away, and that's not going to go away.
Then maybe we go buy the author a drink at a con, or a tshirt at a concert, but that gatekeeper? all he gets is a hearty "go fuck yourself".
the obvious answer to me seems like a ddos style campaign to clog their system with so many false positives that it's revealed for the absurdity that it is. i have a feeling that's a felony if someone without a stable of lawyers trys to do it though.
...ok, but what happened to the file sharer? o'dwyer?
haven't heard anything about him lately. kind of a kick in the teeth if they extradite him, but hold onto the kid who hacked the pentagon.
lol, i'm sure the judges would say the same thing about the technology. "if those damned techies didn't intentionally make it so hard to understand, then we wouldn't assume they're hiding something, and be forced to break their toys"
i can understand Chen's decision, but i can't forgive it. being a mod on the shady side of the internet involves mostly eating a mountain of dicks, from a mountain of assholes.

But there's no greater offense than using someones information to reach out and wreck their real life, because you can't outargue them on the web.
I doubt many will agree with me, it's just.... principle.

I honestly can't imagine why i would do any of those things, any more than visiting the itunes store to fill up my ipod.
it's a great ereader, but there's no reason to allow yourself to be held hostage to someones TOS.
