I would more properly ask why should the record company have any rights to the music in a few more years, after all copyright is a limite... oh never mind, they changed the rules of the game partway through again.
With the reports coming out of France showing that HADOPI isn't doing what they were expecting (is anyone outside the Recording and Movie industry surprised?), one would think they would hesitate to do something that might draw the Public's ire...
The MPAA/RIAA subscribe to the "If at first you don't succeed, just make your backrooms deals more secretive and grease the politician's palms even more" philosophy when it comes to copyright expansion laws.
Except they were complaining that it was last mile congestion that required them to impliment the data caps, ie the traffic that was inside of the sections Comcast activly controls and maintains. Is their network suddenly not congested and is there still a need for the data caps?
It is supposed to be a Jury of your Peers. If they find someone who has his head in the sand and knows nothing about computers much less what the Internet is how is that a Peer (the fact that he is a multimillionaire and puts him in a totally different circle of "peers" notwithstanding).
Maybe that is his plan. Get his side out into the public as much as possible then demand a Jury trial. If he talks long and loud enough how can the jury selection teams find anyone who doesn't know something about the case and already formed an opinion?
Why so worried? AT&T will just ask their buddies in congress to pass another "Get out of jail free" card and all this will get handwaved under the table.
So.. if I happened to have a talent for painting or drawing, I could be in trouble for doing a drawing in the same style as say.. Salvador Dali or Monet or any other modern era artist?
And the industry wonders why we scoff at their laws. They have gotten so out of hand that it seems nigh impossible to do anything on the Internet without some collection agency or privacy monitor group sticking their nose in.
I think the EU Commission has seen the writing on the wall and are pushing it off to the Court of Justice to weigh in on it so that when it finally does go down in a flaming wreck they can say "We were trying to protect you! See! We sent it to the EU Court of Justice!"
Worse. They will just tell the judge how "Deeply ashamed they are." How they express "The utmost remorse for their actions." and that "They will take this opportunity to reflect on their actions and learn from their mistake."
Then, unless one of them has a previous record of misconduct the judge will give them a slap on the wrist sentence and tell them not to do it again. Which will of course be ignored, only this time they will be more secretive about it.

And people will continue to ignore Copyright laws because they had no say in their making and always seem to go one way with little to no compromise.
