This leads to some interesting ethics for artists; if artists offer their skill for free, it devalues the entire market for artists, which diminishes the price people are willing to pay, (Isn't there a book, (or maybe a couple dozen . . .), about how to rip-off artists on deviant art to get free or very cheap art for your business?).

Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing: Perhaps we can reduce the coists of education to governments wlsewhere, meaning more monies freed up for other things that government need, like infrastructure.
SACEM requires artist registration so that you can get paid in SACEM-licensed venues. They also seem to require registration so that you can print your disks legitimately.
Even then, the point still applies: provided all other laws have been complied with, why shouldn't the guy buy the damn textbooks elsewhere if it allows him to concentrate more on, y'know, teaching?

Moreover, if it's incremental income, than that means that the profits have already been made and the increments arew pure profit.
You mean like in the US, where there generally is a considerable markup when compared with other countries, such as the UK and Germany (never mind countries such as Uganda, Venezuela and Jamaica)?

I think that what all these industries are actually competing against is time. If I have to spend 25 minutes obtaining software, just so I can purchase an item, be limited in what I can do with it, not actually own it in any meaningful way, and y'know, get treated like a criminal at every step, then chances are, I'm ignoring you.
For example of this, I recently found otu that my AppleID was inactive and could only be reactivated with a fee. How did I find this out, you ask? By having all my legally purchased iTunes files missing from my media library.
Contrast this with Steam (inb4 "STEAM R DRM N00B"). I recently purchased yet another Humble Bundle. From payment to playing? 30 minutes (including download time on Steam). No fuss, no hassle, no problem.
See the time difference between the two? Five minutes. Know which one I'll be doing more of?
