Take a moment and look at the countries where guns are outlawed. Did it stop crimes like this? NO IT DID NOT.
In fact China was having a problem a while back. Guys running around school stabbing as many people as they could. Guns are not the problem.
This by the way is coming from a fan of violet video games who also has a growing gun collection. I greatly enjoy shooting guns and yet I have ZERO desire to go shooting anyone. In fact I don't care to shoot anything that is living without a good reason. I just really love target shooting.
You know, I would really love to see the Government, and everyone else as well, quit trying to place blame for things like this anywhere other than where it is due. The guy has serious issues and he is the only one to blame. He did it of his own. The games, movies, or whatever did not "make him do it".
These people love to place blame on things they don't like to try and get that thing outlawed. I fully expect to see people protesting all kinds of things over this. Violent games will be up there on the list and gun ownership will also be up there. These things do not by themselves cause issues. The problem is the guy.
Yeah, because books and t-shirts are totally the same as a label on a soft drink or beer.
Maybe a logical line to draw would be where it will actually cause confusion, you know like that line where it becomes a LABEL ON A BEVERAGE. I don't really expect you or any of the other maximalists to understand such a concept though. So why don't you just run along and enjoy a refreshing sip of your new novel....
Well you see, here in the US the government works really hard to have nothing but the best crooks. It does all these stupid things to catch the people making stupid mistakes.
Then it takes these people and tosses them into criminal training (I'm sorry, I mean prison). This way they can all get together and learn from each other.
As an added measure they put a little check in the box next to "felon" in their record to make sure once they are out of school (prison) they are not able to get a real job anymore.
She is trying a new business model. After making money taking her clothes off she found her income decreasing steadily and figured she would mix things up. Now she is trying to make money for keeping he clothes on.
Actually an interesting book to bring into this debate. Perfect example of a book that has long been public domain and yet still sells tons of copies. Isn't that strange? A book no one ever has to pay for and yet they still do.....
Well, I can tell you that my sister who is an author was actually very excited when she found one of her books in a torrent. That was even when it was just part of a bundle of other books.
The fact that your being pirated is a measure of your success in a way. If no one is pirating your stuff it means you totally suck.
You know you just look like a moron ranting about "evil pirates" right? Watching you is about like watching a crazy drunk babbling while filling sand bags to try and keep back the tide.
Hate to break it to you. No matter how much you yell and scream and throw fits, piracy is not going to stop. If you actually take the time to read and understand what people here are saying you will realize we are not saying piracy is right. We are offering a suggestion on how to deal with it in a manner that would actually help.
Of course I'm happy to sit back in my lawn chair and laugh at you filling your sand bags and ranting. It does not bother me any.
I'm sorry, but I don't think that is expecting all that much. If a kid in his basement can get me DVD quality download of a movie before I can even buy the DVD then how is it you claim it is impossible for movie studios to do? Are you saying that kid is better equipped, smarter, more resources? What makes this so freaking hard?
What we expect of them is not impossible, we know this because other people already offer it that way. So quit pretending it would be such a huge burden on the movie studios.
Well, I guess I'm a bit bias as I for one am not a "pirate-apologist" but I am a highly accomplished pirate.
With this experience I have I can tell you that fighting piracy the way they are currently is totally useless. In fact it is worse than that. They are actually hurting their customers and doing nothing to the pirates.
They put all these restrictions in place on how you can use the product you have paid for. They then threaten you with HUGE fines and jail time if you dare steal THE ITEM YOU BOUGHT. Those "warnings" are stupid and the first thing that pirates toss when they rip a video. So the only people who see them PAID FOR THE MOVIE.
So lets see. I can pirate a movie and get it quickly without leaving the comfort of my home. It will be in HD and in a format that I can use across all my devices. There will be no threats of fines or jail. There also will be no commercials or other unneeded trash. OR I can buy it. If I buy it then it will be locked onto one particular format. I will be threatened with fines and jail time. Then forced to watch commercials.
Is it really any wonder why piracy is so bad? You treat your costumers like trash and guess what? They will not respect you and ignore your bitching and crying. Now if you treat your customers with respect and sell them what they want, then you will be filthy rich and the "Piracy problem" will solve itself.
As a side note, my experience with "piracy" is pirating the good copies of things I already own.
Really a pity how hard it is to organize large scale protests. If everyone who was insulted by the TSA would all protest the same day then we might get a change, but most people would be too worried about getting to their place on time and so on.
Just think about it though if everyone who went to an airport carried a pocket knife on them one day. TSA end up having to check everyone and finding a knife on almost everyone they check. The system would crash and they could not handle it.
The whole thing is just stupid these days. There is no way in hell anyone is going to hijack a plane anymore. I don't care if you have an assault rifle, the other passengers will kill you if you stand up and say your taking the plane.
"Don't people usually get paid to act in a movie?"
In response to this I ask you a simple question. If you went to say Comic-con and stood in front of the crowd of people and announced that $5000 would get them an appearance in Batman as an extra, I'm talking just showing up on screen and not even having a line in the film. How many people do you think would pay that $5000?
I'm willing to bet you would have have more than a few. So you trying to make it seem like this was a "job" that they had to drag him into is just stupid.
"Why not just let him enjoy a little perq for his career in public service."
Are you serious? I have a hard time believing someone is so stupid. Why not just let him take bribes? Really?
IF HE DOES THIS KIND OF THING HE IS NOT DOING A PUBLIC SERVICE. That is why there are the rules against "gifts" AKA BRIBES. Taking these things shows he is not serving the public but is serving Hollywood.
"Separate compartments for every passenger, people. Then your hands strapped to the steering wheel, with your head in a bit of a vice... only safe way to go."
Then they will have to require tacks in the seat or something to make sure you can't fall sleep while driving.
I have more than once done something "distracting" because it was safer to be slightly distracted and awake than to try and be totally focused and pass out going 70.
"I still don't understand why we don't just do the simple thing: make dangerous and distracted driving illegal, and just teach people the human consequences of doing something moronic like texting while driving."
The stupid thing is they already made this law. I am pretty sure "reckless driving" is illegal everywhere. That pretty much covers anything you can think of. It even includes morons that can't drive even if fully focused on the road.
So the real question is, why don't we just enforce the rules that we have and quit adding stupid nit picky ones on top of them?
For some people talking on the phone while driving is a major distraction. For others it is not a big deal and no worse than talking to a passenger.
That brings up another point that really bothers me. Here it is these people are trying to say I can't use a phone while I drive because it is distracting. Well, I would say a screaming 2 year old throwing cheerios around the car is also distracting, where is the law banning them?
"The amount of information that is used by many companies has outstripped the storage capacity of individual memory devices. The information must be stored across hundreds or thousands of individual memory devices and machines. The ability to keep track of information as it is distributed across numerous devices and machines, while still allowing users to retrieve it seamlessly upon request, is a feat that was impossible until recently."
That is really funny to me considering my father used to work for digital back in the 80s. I have many times sat and had conversations with him about different things and listened as he talked about all the things they used to do. Back then often things were still stored on tapes. He once described to me a system that had a computer handling IO requests from a server. It knew where each tape was and where the data would be on each tape. It could their for quickly que up request and spin the tapes to most efficiently grab the data needed.
Basically the kind of system these guys describe has been around almost as long as computers have. It might be on bigger scale, but there have always been storage limitation problems. This solution of storing across multiple drives is not new.
You guys scream "ITS FOR THE CHILDREN" when you want to censor things and stop speech. As a result we point out how stupid that is and how much it effects others.
Now Mike is pointing out that something needs to be done "For the children" but instead of censoring anything he instead is fighting for THEIR VERY RIGHT TO SPEAK.
So no in BOTH cases what Mike is fighting for is a FREE SPEECH.
It is kind of funny that you would say that. It is VERY possible to force a company to do business with people they don't want to do business with. What do you think a lot of anti-discrimination laws do?
On top of that, you definitely can hold a company responsible for breaking any contracts they may have signed. So really I guess we will see how far this goes, but it sounds like Visa is in a bad spot to try and fight it.
Oh the horrors, Mike is pimping a book using the old system!! (By the way Mike, when did you change your name to Rob? That really makes things confusing) Now everyone is just going to pirate it!! (Ironic isn't it? A book about piracy getting pirated.) Oh, the world is just going to end now!! (Or just maybe all us "filthy pirates" will go buy the book because the guy connected with fans and gave us a reason to buy)
