This is also the flip side to the whole "you're only licensing it" bullshit. Since the license that allows you to use it is distinct from the physical copy they don't have to be the same. E.g. I have a license for Windows 10 on my computer. If I need to reinstall it it doesn't have to be the same copy I used originally. I can download a fresh copy and use that. As long as it's the same software (e.g. Windows 10 Pro) it's legit.
Well the NSA weren't the ones that released it. That's why they were mad. The DOJ was investigating the NSA. The DOJ released the report. The NSA was/is being pissy because it makes them look bad. The NSA would have to go after the DOJ for releasing it.
I did as well. I haven't even touched it though. Lack of Chromecast support means that I'm restricted to watching it on my phone or I have to drag a laptop into the bedroom, find a suitable surface to set it on so it doesn't overheat etc. So for the moment I'm still stuck paying for Hulu to watch the Gates. I do get the nifty free shirt though.
The images showed the eat shit bob to be in the title. It's child's play to implement a block on that at either the client or more likely the mail server level. In either case the lawyers could also be whitelisted (especially easy at the server level).
Possibly I'm misreading (and I've little doubt that it will end up abused) but it doesn't seem to be as bad as most of the article makes it out to be.
may not take action...in such a way as to REQUIRE students or faculty to publicly express a given view of social policy.
Sounds like students or faculty are free to express whatever view they want, the university just can't tell someone "You can only publicly express this view or you will be in trouble."
Possibly throwing her ex and herself under the bus too?
The user claims that she made this sex tape at 17. That would make it, legally speaking, child porn. (Whether it should be or not is another discussion entirely.) That also means that a prosecutor could go after her ex and potentially her, depending how involved she was in the recording of it, for production and/or possession of child porn. This could potentially go from bad to worse for her.
Next up, I expect them to start suing realtors who sell an infringing house and anyone who owns one and is trying to sell it. "Your house infringes on our copyrights. You are liable up to $150,000. But tell you what. It's a lot of trouble for both of us having to go to court and deal with all that mess. Tell you what. Tell you what. Give us 2% of the selling price and we will drop the matter."
Okay, so, seriously, this guy's house burnt down, the HOA requires it to be (more or less) identical in appearance to the rest of the neighnorhood. The original builder won't rebuild it and won't let him build one that matches. What are this guy's options? Will the insurance have to buy him a completely different home somewhere else?
It would be nice if I could do it in Windows but they updated the discs such that newer ones needed a software update and I wasn't paying $70 to buy the latest version of PowerDVD.
Oh my god, this. I have a bluray drive on my PC. I tried watching a movie on it, it said it required updates to the bluray software. I went to update it and the version I need to upgrade to is a free upgrade but I can't update to because it was an OEM version (the computer OEM doesn't provide an update). So, basically, they updated the features on the Blu-ray disc that broke the software and required updates on it. I wasn't about to pay $70 just to watch the bluray I legally owned. So I said screw it and downloaded the best one I could find and seeded the shit out of it.
It's hardly just the Millennials. We subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime and now Hulu. There have been several instances where we wanted to watch a particular movie. I searched for it on all three services as well as Comcast's OnDemand library. All I found were options to buy it for close to $20. In one case I went and bought a (used) copy of the 20+ year old movie off Amazon for $4 shipped. Guess who didn't see a penny of it? For other movies I've searched, given up and went to the Pirate Bay for it. I really did try to do it legit but when four different streaming services don't have it then, eh, whatever. I'm not paying $20 for a movie I will watch exactly one time.
Political speech criticizing the government and it's policies? Of all the protected speech in this country, that is by far the most protected and, indeed, the EXACT reason for the creation of the First Amendment (well, part of it at least).
So now someone will have to get it mailed to their home and then turn around and mail it back out to Muckrock. It will probably have it's intended effect of keeping things off of there because too many people will either forget or not be bothered to make the effort or just plain won't want to spend the extra money postage.

Yeah, this really seems like a quick trip to Federal pound me in the ass prison. No bueno for him.
Well the US rule has a sunset clause, it's only for 96 hours. Not to say that they definitely won't extend it but for the moment it is set to expire (which also suggests a specific threat they were reacting to).
