Judge: This court finds you guilty of Hooliganism in the first degree.
Defendant: Wait, what?
Judge: Your sentence, since this is not a real crime, will be six years served in imagination jail. You will be required to imagine cold concrete and bars surrounding you at all times. You will have a chance for imagination parole after 4 years.
Defendant: Um, ok. That doesn't even sound like an enforceable punishment.
Judge: Next case, a third strike filesharing offender. Oh this sounds just like my previous case. . .
People want music on their own terms. If it is not easy and convenient, people would rather do it in a way that is. This idea of a phone that downloads music is 1) not the way that many people want to consume their music all the time, and 2) not terribly convenient. So, it is not the music itself that determines whether or not something like this is successful, it is the way it is delivered, and the method in which it is utilized.
But you just said all those stupid blind people deserve what they get. They are the ones who step out into "traffic", but do so safely because they can hear the cars coming. The sound is also what keeps them in line in a crosswalk, and tells them when a car is stopped and only idling. The blind area actually quite ingenious at using car sounds to gather information about their environment. So don't assume everyone who can't see a car coming is an idiot.
I believe they take a 50% commission. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard. That's why I don't buy things on iTunes, I would rather support the artist than support Apple. Artists should use bittorrent as a free way to distribute, then accept donations for the music. This way, the people who pay for it already will be giving the full amount to the artist, and those who don't want to pay the current prices could still support the artist in a smaller way.
If Techdirt was newspaper, I would buy it. It focuses on issues that I care about and allows me to interact with the community. If newspapers did this, they would be able to monetize like crazy [CwF+RtB]. The fact they don't just illustrates how backwards-minded they are. They can no longer decide what we consume, so they must convince us that it is worthwhile.
The mafIAA would like eliminating computers, putting us back in the dark ages of *gasp* vinyl, where they could sell us huge pieces of plastic instead of the tiny ones that are used today. If they coul dget rif of all computers, they would. THINK OF THE [ARTISTS]!
