The government got its man, but it also showed it's willing to pin life sentences on third party marketplace facilitators, which is a bit like locking up Backpage execs because sex traffickers use their site to… oh wait.
I don't think that comparison is quite valid. Backpage is a site that is used, incidentally, by some people involved in illegal activities - but silk roads was designed and operated SPECIFICALLY AND INTENTIONALLY for illegal activities.
And personally, I think contracting a murder or two DOES justify a life sentence - there's a big difference between that and mere "third party marketplace facilitation".
I don't. I've been reading both Popehat and Techdirt since they started, and this is the first time I've ever felt the *need* to send Ken a note about anything.
And I don't read his twitter feed, because I don't do twitter or any other "social" media.
We're having difficulty finding the terrorist needle in the haystack. Let us have a BIGGER haystack, 'cause that will make it easier to find the needle. Don't worry if a lot of it is really weeds and dirt; that just means there's less hay to sort through.
Contrary to what the story says, the legislative changes are NOT, in fact, a knee-jerk reaction to the events. These changes have been scheduled for months, and were, in fact, scheduled to be introduced the day of the shooting.
Even if you consider the proposed changes to be overboard and overbroad (I certainly do), it's nothing more than a very bad coincidence.

I don't disagree with you, but I'm curious - how else do you expect it to be when a position in the state senate is not a full time job?
Starting senators make $16,000, and the highest paid makes $55,000.
Bottom line: There is not a single senator in the state who is NOT going to be in a conflict of interest from time to time.
