"Artists likely enjoy people using their material, but if something hits, why shouldn't some of the value that they added come back to them?"
It more than likely would. With viral - totally free - marketing.
The only thing I can see being important here is that the author of work #2 make mention of the source of his inspiration, work #1. Which would lead to the free publicity for author of work #1.
Oh boy - kind of has a "creepy" factor to it. Would make me feel untrusted and spied on. But each to their own.
I had a car stolen in the late 70's. LEO found it by the end of the day. In other words, they did their job instead of letting a GPS tracker do it all for them.
I'm torn on this one, human nature being what it is and all... I mean, what he did was pretty good overall and one could kind of say it was "self defense" of a sort, but wouldn't it have been far better to ignore the fake profile and not engage in such hideous game playing? Look at the example he's set (especially for young people/kids). Now tons of people are going to try to play this kind of game on others. Let the games begin...
In other words, what can of worms did he open up? It may not all be "good".
On the other hand, if it would make silly women who play these silly games think twice it could serve a good purpose. Somehow though, I can't see it working that way.
It's truly amazing how food and science go together.
For a while I found myself fascinated with the concept of solar cooking and aimed to try something so I tried "Solar Smores". It worked! But being in WI the days we can do this are numbered, unfortunately. Here's the "recipe" if anyone wants to try it - it's fun! I put it in my weekly newsletter and got a lot of positive feedback.
Solar S'mores
Four graham crackers
16 mini marshmallows
2 plain chocolate candy bars
A 9 x 13-inch glass baking dish (or similar size)
A clear glass lid to cover the baking dish
Place four graham crackers side by side in the bottom of the glass baking dish. Place a chocolate bar on two of the graham crackers. Place eight mini-marshmallows on top of the other two graham crackers. Cover the pan with the clear glass lid, and place it outside where it will be in direct sunlight. Wait for the marshmallows and chocolate to melt. Put one chocolate and one marshmallow cracker together and enjoy! This activity works best when outdoor temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Recipe makes two S'mores.
I don't "hate" it by any means but don't have much respect for it or give it much credibility ever since they allowed a 14 year old kid to post a bunch of tripe that was so far from the truth it wasn't funny. This occurred several years ago.
Many of us involved in the matter contacted them for corrections, showed them where to find the accurate information, yet the BS still stands. So I just pass it by.
As for all those reference links...they'd better hope none link to any "infringing content" or they're going to get bitch slapped with a heap of lawsuits of "ProtectIP" goes through. This new hire will have his work cut out for him.
Mmmm. Love muffins - how about cinnamon-mini-chocolate chip? Want one? I'll even share with a moron like you because I'm just that way.
As to whether or not the discussion may include "me", when an admin of this web site tells me a discussion is "not for me" and/or requests I not take part, I will refrain from posting.
So, is your name Mike Masnick? All I see there is an Anonymous Coward, which he is not.
Until then I will continue to treat it as an invitation to the general public - which yes, includes me - and I suggest you consider being the one to STFU if you cannot add anything constructive.
I used to love Best Buy but last year while checking out on their web site using my Best Buy credit card (which I'd used A LOT and always paid off quickly) and they wanted me to add yet another credit card #. That's when I said my good-bye's to Best Buy.
Haven't tried NewEgg yet, as we don't have one but off I go to find their web site. : )
Gee AC, give the guy a chance - crosses my mind that perhaps he doesn't just sit here all day waiting with baited breath for a "challenge" from you...but what do I know, I guess.
I wish I understood how a digital copy of anything truly and really hurts anyone. I just can't compute that in my dingbat brain.
Re: Re: Criminal Vs Civil - do you understand the difference ?
No kidding. Comparing copyright to murder? Are you kidding me?
Who IS this "darryl" person? From what planet is s/he?
What an odd one.
Anyway, it's a sad state of affairs when someone is arrested for a hyperlink, no matter what it's too. I continue to stand by that belief. If something is "so horrible" go after the "so horrible", not the link to it.
Re: Bill Aimed At Something That Is Already Happening?
"Basically, we are ALL SUSPECTS, all the time."
Exactly, Derek! It is difficult to comprehend that anyone can just "be okay" with this. This is pure insanity.
To the "this is okay" people; wait until you're accused of something you're totally innocent of just because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time - but LEO says you're guilty so that's that. You're diddled.
I know ... was thinking about that, too. If I went to the Memorial and saw people quietly dancing, and didn't know the story behind what they were doing, I might find it a little odd but I would simply smile and move on. I don't see that they were harassing or following or tormenting anyone else in the vicinity.
But then I was brought up to mind my own business and not judge others.
You know what really makes me sad? How so many jump on humankind as if we are ALL criminals right off the bat, bar none. I should think all Americans here were brought up with the same law I was: "Innocent until proven guilty".
Gosh, why do you suppose that was so important to have in our laws? Because in reality, most people are good and decent and go about their daily lives with no desire to be "shady" or criminal.
No matter what can be abused on the streets or on the Internet, there is always going to be a small segment of humankind who are going to find ways to abuse it and not even care who they hurt. That's the sad fact of life 101. That's why we pay LEOs.
What wasn't bargained for was idiot lawmakers making everything humans do illegal (along with robbing them blind) to the point that we can't even respect the law anymore.
It doesn't make crime right, but it's a fact of reality that will always be there no matter what. I think a worse crime is looking at every single other human being and thinking, "Criminal!" "Evil!" "Bad guy/gal!" "You are therefore you are criminal!"
The way some of you talk we should all live in a bubble and have nothing to do with the outside world lest we "break a law". Wow. What a world.
Sigh. There just has to be fairness and balance in everything - and more importantly, logic and reason. It's sad to see us losing it all.
