Wow...the amount of venom in this thread is overwhelming. The point that Mike seemed to be making that you are quite obviously too dense to understand is that those venture companies KNOW that these artists will make back their investment. BUT, through accounting games, they are able to prevent the books from being balanced, so they can show that the artists still owe money in order that they have no need to pay out to the artists.
We all don't have to be experts in this field to easily see the fraud that is going on here. The burden of proof for the claims being made in this thread is on you, not us. Most of us are regular readers/commenters and we know how to use Google to find citations. We regularly see citations from Mike and are used to him linking to his own articles which have commentary on source articles. You however, are an unknown, untrustworthy because you provide no citations or evidence in any way.
Actually, he's being VERY reasonable and credible. You're plucking at strings because this argument strikes at the core of everything that you've argued so far on this thread. The difference between safe search and SOPA/PIPA IS the difference between filtering and censorship. Filtering is the act of the user to differentiate between what they want to see and what they don't. Censorship is another party preventing you from seeing something. You have no choice in the matter.
Candy coat it all you want. Go ahead and pretend that it's necessary censorship, but you can't dodge the fact that it is, by it's very definition, censorship. Now granted, that doesn't paint you in a very good light. Your PR department boss isn't going to be very happy with that.
We understand that it is censorship here. We're well past that definition stuff. What we continue to discuss is why this censorship is more damaging than it is helpful.
Re: Re: Re: Re: @ "the original Microsoft Basic was their own"
I would argue that introducing new languages as alternatives to Java is actually innovation. Java does not fit like a glove on every project.
Actually, the introduction of languages I feel is quite innovative in general. Sure, there's frustration that stems from the vast array of choices out there and the fragmentation/specialization that grows out of that, but the community in general decides what languages will become popular and which will die, so overall, it's kinda an evolution of the programming languages if you will, which is most likely an overall general improvement.
Funny...Dark Helmet is a content creator...not a middleman pretending to care about content creators. His comments in regards to your stupidity ring well with both camps...the dinosaurs don't create. They stomp out anything that they don't control.
As the newcomer to this site, I actually would like you to point us to your factual information. Specifically, I want to see cases where the followup actions that you speak of - those serving DMCA notices in bad faith being prosecuted.
I haven't seen a lot of news on that. To be honest, I haven't seen ANY news on that. I read a LOT more than Techdirt every day and don't always have the time to comment, but I've always felt the Techdirt community is pretty honest and good at weeding out the bad information from the good. As the Anonymous Coward, you are, honestly, burdened with the responsibility of providing the proof as our factual information is usually already cited. If you can't use the search engine, go somewhere else.
Nice one. You picked the weakest comment of the bunch to respond to, completely ignoring all the other comments that point out the problems with yours. We're still waiting for you to show us your numbers.
We've had studies linked on this site for YEARS, and you come in here in 3 posts expecting us to take anything you say on hearsay? I'm sorry, but it's YOUR responsibility, not ours to provide the proof. We've already done so. Not our problem that you're too lazy to use the search feature.
Sorry but I'm gonna have to call out Bullshit on this. Ron Paul has been quite consistent in stating that he doesn't believe that abortion is right but he is not willing to criminalize women who have them. Whether you like the guy or not, he's REALLY consistent.
Woah.Woah.Woah...I missed the new shill memo on the new language for trolling...Big Hardware, Big Piracy, and Big Search? Really? Who the heck comes up with this stuff?
There's nothing wrong with people wanting to monetize their work. Never has been. Never will be. The market works by providing goods and services that people want. If you don't provide those, then people will get something else or go to someone who does. You want to make money? Then offer the goods and services people want. Period.
Your arguments don't even address REAL comments or opinions held by those who frequent this site. Cut the BS. You're just wasting my screenspace.
Edit: Also, a note...IIRC, I believe he had already made his parody BEFORE asking Lady Gaga for permission. In fact, Lady Gaga liked the parody. It was her manager that shot it down without even letting her know that Weird Al had made such a request. It wasn't until Weird Al actually met her in person and they talked that Lady Gaga even found out about the parody at all.
Anyway, TL;DR; Weird Al is aware of his right to be able to parody and has explicitly stated so before, but chooses not to exercise that right.
Weird Al has stated more than once that he is aware of parody laws and that he COULD create his parodies without permission, if he so chose. He has also stated that his asking for permission is a professional courtesy that he is extending to people. He is not required to extend these courtesies and he has pointed out that he knows this fact, but he chooses to do so anyway.
Were you around when they started...I seemed to recall something along the lines of the grandparent's comments...o how quickly they were absorbed by the Republican party though.
It IS slightly more difficult to track and Anonymous Coward's post history than a registered user. I know that I don't consciously track your posts (though, some do it does appear) and would not have remembered your previous post without your Oh-so-helpful comment.
And you thought that the MPAA/RIAA didn't create jobs. What more could you want than a job from the prestigious lobbying organizations themselves shilling?
I can understand that dealing with the stupid drivers on the road might be frustrating to the point that something like red light cameras might be an attractive solution. Nonetheless, I can't advocate something that potentially increases hazards on the road (makes them more unpredictable at the least) and at best doesn't seem to have any net effect (according to past studies...this study appears to be rather lacking...it might be different if we could point to quality studies upholding the safety-increases that red-light cameras bring).
I 100% agree that we need to make people pass more rigorous tests...if they can't drive, don't pass them...if they have their license and are pulled over for being a hazard to traffic (assumes cops are out looking for hazards, not necessarily speeders or other such big-fine ticket items...), revoke their license...if people can't handle the consequences of reckless driving, then I'm not confident they should be on the road in the first place.
For red lights, I still believe in two things: increase yellow light timings...in the city that I currently live in, the yellow light timings are all over the place...downtown where speed limits are 25mph, yellow lights last 5-7s...out on the fringes of town where speed limits are 55, some yellow lights are not even 2s long (also...red light cameras :) )...if that's not problem causing, I don't know what is. The second issue that I think needs to be addressed is the pause between a direction receiving a red light and another direction receiving the green. That pause should aid in clearing an intersection. My only issue with this though would be concern that behaviors might be affected over time...and people would ignore red lights as well...
In the end, the cause of the issue (too many unqualified drivers on the road) needs to be addressed...
