The Grateful Dead was one of the biggest revenue generating bands of all time, and they did it without radio support. They let their fans record and trade their music freely and even though they didn't sell many records, they made more money than almost any other artist of their time. Do not underestimate the income potential of touring and merch. Due to shady record company accounting practices, most artists don't make money from record sales anyway.
Matt, I'm pretty sure the publisher or distributor or whatever is different in the UK than it is here in the US. So the guy on the radio's company does not make any money if you buy the import copy. BTW, not defending him, just stating a fact.
I hope the consumers in Britain realize what an utter travesty this bill is and boycott the major content providers there. Buy used! It's perfectly legal and ethical and the Entertainment cabals don't see a penny from it.
It doesn't surprise me that the producers of that show want total control over all aspects of marketing and the public image of the show. You can't have some kid Tweeting about how the show is rigged and how they knew who was going to win all along.
These people need to read Joseph Campbell"The Hero with 1000 Faces. Avatar, Star Wars, Dances with Wolves, Dune, the story of Moses in the Bible; these are all expressions of the monomyth. These are the types of stories that have resonated with the human psyche for thousands of years.
I doubt you can hear the difference between a 320kbps vbr mp3 and the original wave file. Put them both through a frequency analyser and look at the wave forms, nearly identical down to the threshold of quantizement.
All of this plays into the myth that in the past, musicians with label deals were able to make a living wage. For the vast majority of label acts, this was NEVER NEVER true.
It's been said here before, but some of the greatest works of classical music, literature, and art could not have been created in today's copyright constrained environment because they were derivative and transformative of existing works.
You don't get on the radio unless you have the corporate machine behind you. The labels and Clearchannel decide what you hear on the radio, so "household name" acts, by definition are corporate label acts.
