if we could simply go with an opt-in copyright, and severe fines for mis-representing copyright (think bogus DMCA takedowns), copyright would fix itself.
make the cost of opt-in, say $10USD, and misrepresenting copyright fines beginning at $500USD, the system would fix itself.
the big content cartels have to pay for their copyrights, with that comes self-policing, no more 'do my dirty work for me to prop up a broken business model'
infringement notices must come with a copy of the registered copyright, and misrepresentations are immediately fined. and fines are matched by ContentID, file a claim, don't own the copyright, your response would be a fine, which could go towards paying for ContentID system.
proof of infringement beyond a doubt, fines related would kill alot of bullshit surrounding copyright already.
Believe me, the DVD is dead and buried. I have 35,000 Standard Definition, and almost 10,000 720p movies on a 20Tb server that streams to my members, and I don't charge a dime.
So, if I can serve that up for about $100/mo, why can't legitimate businesses? If all those streaming pirates are making billions of dollars via advertisements, then why doesn't the MAFIAA exploit the same?
I can tell you why, they don't want to, because all those streaming pirates are NOT making the 'big' bucks, they do it out of passion. And 'Big Content' has zero passion. They want to continue to fuck the public for the big margins they were used to, hence the imaginary 'lost sale' bullshit.
I'm sorry, I thought you were arguing for middle ground between the maximalists and the abolitionists. We only began a crusade for abolishing copyright since the maximalists are demanding ever increasing enforcement and longevity.
Balance for what? Copyright was intended to reflect the intense labour inherent in creating the work in question, like scribes creating bibles. Today, there is no intensive work involved in creating copies, so remind me again why copright has been extended while the labour required to make copies has lessened?
Try a program called Handbrake, under Audio, you can mix-down to a more compatible quality for your particular system (good rule of thumb is target a level of quality known to playback to your liking). It is more than likely the built-in codecs in VLC might not be completely supported on your hardware.
With Handbrake you can convert the .mkv file to almost anything of lesser quality than the original, and potentially more compliant with your system.
I gotta kinda agree with 'that one guy' below, just let the whack job think he's won, click Report, and move on. Out of 31 replies, now 32, nary a handful are relevant. I've been profiling users online for 15 years, and this whack-job is never going to be satisfied with any answer anyone gives unless it fits into his reality distortion field.
Even I have fallen bait to this psychopath.
OT: I have colleagues all over the world and everyone of them can confirm that not only has the USA fallen from the grace of our peer's eyes, but fallen mightily. I renewed my passport JIC this country is overrun by psychopaths, and I too can run to Ecuador. It's refreshing to know there is at least ONE country not suckin' the ball sack.
It took him nearly an hour to respond to the article (check the timestamps), he must have fell asleep momentarily at the keyboard to have waited so long before replying.
It took the community even less time to start getting his replies red flagged. I gotta give it to those that STILL reply to his obsessive posts with undisputed facts, with links and all.
Sounds like all you want is sufficient 'wording' from Mike so that you can sue Techdirt for 'conspiracy to defraud'. Does your life hang in the balance of an adequate response from Masnick?

attempting to support your outdated, useless copyright maximal-ism with the first amendment is just mind blowing.

See how ludicrous copyright is yet? I hope bob blows a head gasket on that one.
