This is another one of those Techdirt stories that I almost have to refuse to believe is true. I keep reading and reading and yes. They are accusing someone of patent infringement because something they patented was used as a plot device in a movie.
Does this mean Dodge can sue the makers of Vanishing Point? (sure, that was probably paid product placement, but still)
I really wish these network head honchos would realize every time they take a clip off Hulu, or make a limitation on it's release, I'm not just going to smile and wait until the DVD comes out so I can give them money. I'm going straight to SurfTheChannel.
The frustrating thing about that is I'm TRYING to give them ad revenue! I'm trying to support the shows I love! But I also want to watch them from the comfort of my computer.
Where did I ever state that it was immune to criticism? I said it's a DRM that works(for the most part), and Mike hasn't given it the credit it deserves.
No. no I'm not. I've never heard complaints that could even begin to compare with the litany of complaints with any other DRM service, and I myself have never had any problems as I've used it in the past few months.
Okay, say you had paid for said book already, I'm pretty sure you can do that. You still don't blame the bookstore because the publisher is putting arbitrary limitations on release.
Point out the part where I said it was immune to criticism. I said it was good. That's it. Mike's beaten up on it at every chance he could get, even though anyone who's used the system (despite obvious exceptions) has given it glowing reviews, and it's doing a LOT of things right.
Steam is a damn fine system. It's flawed, but it's light years ahead of anything else on the market. Mike, look into other digital distribution outlets for games or game DRM services, then get back to us on how a Steam is horrible. One publisher delayed ONE game on ONE service? Would you write a post if your local bookstore was a little late getting a book on the shelves because the publisher decided to make an arbitrary limitation on the sale of the book?
I find no. 11 really interesting because it really shows that in monetizing online content (newspapers come to mind) you can never rely on people to buy your product, even if they in a poll (or another kind of feedback space) say that they would.
With that in mind I'm seriously considering the DMCA takedown shirt, but I'm pretty strapped for cash right now.
