You're using "Ponzi" and "pyramid" interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing. In a Ponzi scheme you lure in more investors to cover earlier debts. The pyramid scheme starts there, but you set it up so that new investors become an active part of the scheme by requiring them to bring in even more investors; it's self-sustaining until it falls apart.
The pyramid investors may or may not undertand the true nature of the scheme but the Ponzi investors would not.
I've also seen a lot of borrowed content used for parody and satire. (Some of it is even funny.) My favorite example would probably be Law Abiding Engineer. (Go ahead, look it up.)
So... does anybody have any statistics showing how many of these contractors have gone on to commit crimes based on the questionable content they've been viewing for a year of their lives?
This will only work with a 2-year-old MMORPG based on a decades-old series of successful Science Fantasy films with a cult following. It would NEVER work with the latest in a decades-old franchise of successful video games.
Remoras cost the host little, and may be beneficial (keeping the host clean). So anybody trying to suggest a parasitic relationship should be wary of that particular analogy.
Re: A slightly different read on one of Cantrell's remarks
Maybe. But if a band uses these techniques to create a show that attracts an audience, is there something inherently wrong with it? On one hand, I agree, if I go to a live show I'd rather experience something real, with all its blemishes. On the other hand, these are matters of taste and opinion. I, for one, refuse to assert my opinion as definitive.
What Cantrell expressed seems more of a judgemental rant to me than merely an expressed opinion.
Of course, it's his right to hate everything that's not just how he wants it to be, just as much as it's my right to feel contempt for anybody who can't accept that it's OK for people not to agree with him.
