The problem is that the FCC is trying to redefine a term, rather than to just define a new term. That gives the telcos a ready-made argument with which to respond. If the FCC wants to establish a poverty line for the internet, they should just do so rather than try to redefine “broadband,” a term that refers to the way in which frequencies are used, not the resulting connection speed. I propose:
Minimum Acceptable Standards for Network Interface Connections in Kbps/Mbps
Just because there is an obvious party in the wrong, you shouldn't ignore the photographer. You at least need to pick on the photographer for getting upset about having his photographs published on the Today Show—nationwide advertising for free—yet responding with a lawsuit instead of a "thank you" card. He should be asking for permission to put their logo on his website (i.e., "As seen on the Today Show"), not filing a lawsuit.
The Super Bowl is getting smaller all the time, albeit slowly. Ten years ago, it was Super Bowl XL. Now, it's Super Bowl L (which they obscure with the "50" logo). In 950 years, it will be Super Bowl M. Small and extra-small can't be too far behind.
First, as you can see, the reward was a holiday trip, and not cash, though apparently there was some confusion over that. So it's not like it's easy to "split." Apparently Mitchell first demanded "half" of the prize.
The DNA will not be used for medical purposes, such as checking for genetic markers of disease, which will avoid issues of whether people should be told about their predisposition to possibly serious illnesses. Nor will the DNA database be used for "lineage or genealogical reasons."
Followed by the unwritten word "yet": "It won't be used for these purposes...yet."
But if money is your only goal, then you risk falling into relativism – a pernicious trap, for you begin weighing all potential returns based on the single metric of how much more money you can make. Truth, beauty, fairness, justice, honesty, civic pride, neighborliness – they become means to an end, rather than ends in themselves. That is debilitating, and ultimately deadens the soul. I want you to confront that challenge. I want you to remember that there are greater and longer-term values than the mere promise of financial wealth that attracts so many to the digital advertising industry.
So when he chose not to take their money, was he displaying truth, beauty, fairness, justice, honesty, civic pride, or neighborliness?
