It's not DRM that is the problem per se, it's the hassle that most DRM creates for legitimate purchasers. Steam's DRM has never, ever been a problem for me or caused me frustration, so it gets a pass.
Bitcoins were massively over-valued for what you could use them for.
The most important thing for Bitcoins is that the price stabilizes. It doesn't matter so much whether it stabilizes at 50 dollars or 5 cents, so long as it does, in fact, stabilize. Too much volatility due to speculation was discouraging vendors from adopting it, because they had no method of accurately gauging the price they should ask for their goods.
The only way to live without government in a society like you suggest is for there to be no greed or corruption.
I'll just leave this here:
"If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?" - Frederic Bastiat, "The Law"
Re: You're trying to make "unquantified" = "unsubstantied".
AND DESPITE "Hargreaves Review's" best efforts, the briefest of looks at The Pirate Bay, Rapidshare, Megaupload, Filesonic, and numerous other sites shows piracy is rampant.
The problem was finding studies that "genuinely demonstrate the negative impact of piracy", not that piracy merely exists. You're moving the goalposts.
Re: You seem to assume the world overlooks eternal wars,
I'll never be able to figure out how OOTB can be so fearful of all the political machinations we see in the world today, and yet consistently come to the defense of any governmental action (so long as Mike opposes it, apparently).
He's either got multiple personalities, or he must have a bitch of a time with cognitive dissonance.
Seriously, outlets like RT and Al Jazeera are practically the only news outlets I trust anymore for US news, seeing as they don't have any reason to suck up to the US government.
Now, if I want to hear criticism on Russia's government, for example, I would choose someone else. But for US news they are refreshingly straightforward.
The point is, they should be talking about how buying legitimate software from Micrisoft will be a boon to the companies in question (Technical support, faster patch cycles, and what have you).
Instead, they seem to have gone out of their way to show how much better off companies were who didn't do business with them. That's not a winning strategy, regardless of what your opinion on IP law is.

Just shows how backwards the industry is today. Apparently they are still extremely worried you are going to bootleg a VHS tape or something.
