Ah well, real innovation has always been fueled by adversity and ingenuity and it looks like the world's police forces have just upped the ante on global adversity and forced the ingenuity of the human critter to jump into high gear.
With luck, all of the nasty semi-legal low-down dirty deeds of the police state and their apologists will be the brain fuel of the future that drives a new industry into prosperity and infamy - public anti-surveillance, encrypted communications devices.
Sure they'll all be deemed illegal by the Lazy LEOs, but at least they'll have to catch you doing something truly illegal before they even know you have any of these devices on you.
And better still, with a biometric sensor, once handled by someone other than its last owner, without that last owner signing it over to its new holder via password, such devices self-erase. :)
How sad is it that a whole population must hide from its own supposedly freedom loving democratic government, in order to communicate freely without being spied upon, and being stalked 24/7?
Not really necessary, since at the start of the Drug War, hardly anyone used drugs, and it was necessary to offer the police extra vacation points for adding drug-discoveries to as many collars as was possible, in order to create the appearance of massive drug use.
Almost every crime became a drug-associated crime.
The same thing has been done for peer to peer by the legacy industries, in order to convince the public that the new laws concerning copyright and net neutrality are necessary to stem the growth of a criminal tsunami called piracy.
The corporations that are writing the new laws that will remove the internet's ability to be a communication media between people world wide and turn it instead into another commercial garbage can like TV, are the same companies that created and owned the websites that distributed the original p2p software and instructed the public in the process of downloading copyrighted material.
In order to make laws that will hand the internet over to Hollywood, they first had to create a criminal activity that could be turned into "a serious problem necessitating drastic measures to solve." in the public's mind.
If all p2p came to an end tomorrow, the news would still be filled with stories of evil pirates stealing the hard earned money of artists by sharing files.
If everyone stopped using every illegal drug tomorrow, the reports of illegal drug use and illegal drug busts and illegal drug deaths would continue to escalate exactly as if nothing had changed.
Re: Re: A simple question for the European Counter-Terrorism Commission:
"...nobody can safely oppose governments."
You missed the point entirely then, because that, in a nutshell, is precisely what this is all about.
Government knows full well it is an obsolete and un-necessary institution and a total waste of public money and time, and is now fully occupied with self survival at any cost. Its primary goal is now to do everything in its power to insure that "nobody can safely oppose governments."
The real job of a government could be easily and efficiently replaced with just a handful of good computers and a couple of 15 year old kids working part time.
Currently, government is nothing more than a rich man's club, designed to insure that the public remains easily exploited so that the rich may continue to get richer.
George Bush proved that America has absolutely no need for a federal government. For a decade, all that the US had was a gang of thieves and cut-throats sitting in the Oval Office, who were totally occupied with robbing as many countries as possible, as fast as they could, and the country carried on as if it had an actual government, no problem.
Abolish the federal mobsters and the world will follow suit and be a much better place for it.
Turn local governments into honest institutions by letting nobody with an income over $100,000 per annum, or more than $200,000 in assets, occupy any public office.
Citizen Candidates Only.
Establish a law against accepting gifts while in public office with a penalty of permanent removal from politics and the loss of all voting rights for twenty five years.
Eliminate lobbying (Bribery) as a legal part of politics and re-establish the separation between church and state.
This entire global surveillance operation is actually just government protecting government and its corporate friends from the public.
The hardest part of this situation, is the lack of solutions. We know the enemy and we know his tactics, but he has all the cards and two spare decks up his sleeves.
I think that most people are already, at least slightly suspicious of government's corruption, although I am certain that not even those who believe the whole game is rigged, are aware of just how deep the corruption goes or to what extent such people as inhabit the halls of power are willing to go to get what the want.
I think that a huge portion of the public simply assumes that there is nothing that can be done about the whole mess anyway and is just trying to lay low, and stay under the radar, in the hopes that they die before fan and feces meet.
Its funny in a way, when you actually understand how fragile the whole game has become. All it would take to end the entire fascist take-over of the USA is for the public to simply stop being consumers, all at once, and stay at it till the wheels of this machine ground to a halt.
It is for this reason that the fascists must use the tactics of terror to keep the public from gathering its feet under itself and becoming the large unstoppable force that it always has been. As long as we fear each other and seek refuge and security in the outstretched arms of our oppressors, we remain weak and ineffectual, and perfect sheep.
While I will never join or participate in any armed insurrection, (unless they shoot first), knowing full well that fighting fire with fire in this case is doomed to fail, I will continue to poke this beast with a pointy stick until the day it finally turns and eats me, or until I break its skin and find its heart.
Re: So... another piece of the Asset Seizure Puzzle appears?
"...the 'War on Drugs' looking more and more like officials attempting to 'get their cut' of the action without looking 'too illegal' about it?"
I have said it before, but it is worth repeating.
Beware. Clear, logical thinking, like that, can get you listed by your own government, as a possible terrorist and leave you open to extraordinary rendition to a foreign country without due process, where you will be tortured for no particular reason until you die, without anyone in your family or among your friends ever knowing where you went, or why you left.
Oh and I forgot to mention, your taxes will pay for the entire "service".
When a large portion of Law Enforcement's income/funding is derived from assets seized from the Illegal Drug Industry, there is less incentive to stop the Illegal Drug Industry because that would end the flow of cash and assets that Law Enforcement gets to keep.
Instead, in order to continue the flow of cash and assets to Law Enforcement from the Illegal Drug Industry, Law Enforcement will start to protect the backbone of the Illegal Drug Industry - the men and women who control the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs - and limit its "enforcement" to lesser departments of the Illegal Drug Industry such as street vendors.
I have no doubt at all, that this situation already exists.
When one finds a money tree, it is always better to regularly pluck its fruit over time, than to chop down the tree and settle for just the fruit that happens to be presently ripe.
I find it eternally comical that so many folks post here about what "We The People" should do to fix government problems, like the above where "we" should impose a $250,000 a day fine upon a government agency until they do their job right.
Its impressive how long it takes for a once pseudo-free nation to realize its been completely stripped of its rights to interfere in the activities of its government.
For sure it would be nice if there was some sort of agency or section of government that was actually working for the People. It would be great if Americans could voice their anger and ideas and there was some official department of government that listened and acted upon those grievances and ideas.
Then some of these suggestions might actually be put into effect and end this farce that should be called Lack of Information Act, along with the hundreds of other farces that have been foisted upon the public by the federal government of the United Snakes.
However, since all the employees working for the federal government, are working purely for the federal government, and the millionaire members of the federal government hierarchy are working purely for their retirement jobs on wall street, and to fill those 30'x 50' offshore bank vaults with detoured tax dollars and gold bullion, it appears that no public input into government machinations will be tolerated in the United States of Hollywood.
I wonder if Americans will ever figure this out.
A decade of semi-legal public surveillance, court negligence over false testimony by police, stop and frisk procedures, no-fly lists, militarized cops, false arrests for taking pictures, and all of the other police state activities that obviously represent a fascist government in action, have simply not made much of an impression on the people of the land of the once upon a time free.
Since its obviously not stupidity, or ignorance, it must be apathy and a sense of helplessness that has turned the Home of the Brave, into the Mega-Ranch of the Cowed and Chained.
I wonder, every time I read the comments here on TechDirt, what it will take to wake the sleeping giant, or if the old American Spirit is actually dead.
Re: I'll bet they had already written this POS law
I suspect it was written a couple days after the US sent them a message explaining the Charlie Hebdo plot they had intercepted and were following closely, but were not interfering with, because it looked like a made-to-order opportunity.
Perhaps somewhat less funny is the possibility that they had the information, knew the perps and what they were planning, but like Pearl Harbor, they decided that allowing the event to take place would further their own plans better than stopping the event.
This might explain somewhat how the politicians were already prepared with new surveillance legislation in order to ride the public's emotional wave in the hopes of reduced scrutiny.
I guess I simply no longer believe in coincidence.
"They mean to rule over us as serfs, and they consider us so stupid they try to divide us over God, Homosexuality, Firearms, and Condoms."
How I wish that last line was completely true, but there is one word that ruins it. "TRY".
They have succeeded repeatedly and continuously to divide and conquer the public over those and other absurdly silly things and the public just keeps right on biting at whatever bait they choose to use.
It is precisely this behaviour that makes them "consider us to be so stupid" as to fall for their phony tricks - because the vast majority of the public does fall for them, always.
Over and over and over again.
While I really do think that a few people are starting to catch on to the fact that they are being managed, like cattle, I also think it unlikely, that enough people will catch on in time or that they will be able to react in time to affect the inevitable outcome their leaders are pushing them towards.
Solidarity among the members of the American public appears to be about as possible to achieve as jumping up and touching the sky.
I thought the article was more about the legitimacy that was granted to elder NEWS media by the public, not about the amount of truth they delivered.
American TV NEWS has always been corporate backed, but the public was far less aware of the connection and could be lied to easier prior to the internet, because they had no real means to verify the information being disseminated by the elder NEWS media.
Old media thus had a good name and was trusted - people believed they were reporting the facts, and to a large extent, they were doing so, far more than today.
However, the modern media is, as was stated in the linked article by Hank Green, hiding behind the Elder NEWS Media's Good Name, pretending to be the same institution, but has become 100% dependant on corporate funding and 100% obedient to corporate needs and resorts to actually lying outright to please their corporate masters quite often.
Young people have simply noted the dishonesty too often to trust the media anymore.
I don't think media is actually much less honest today than it was 30 years ago, but the public certainly had more trust in the media back then than it does today.
As far as Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best and other TV sitcoms and series are concerned, that's not the NEWS media.
That was simply the style of social engineering propaganda of that day, and such tripe is still being produced and shown on TV today, although today its more about owning the newest technology/fashion to increase sales and turning in your neighbor for strange behavior to increase surveillance legality and hiding from the army of terrorists and drug dealers that inhabit every second house/building in the world to increase "War On" type budgets and to legitimize torture by the good guys to get info.
The difference is precisely as you noted yourself. Modern culture simply "allows" the NEWS media to be more lurid and less honest today, but the point being made was that the young public has lost all trust in that media and it does not appear that new NEWS media is even remotely capable of getting that trust back.
"Poverty is caused by low wages, a low tax take (fewer welfare benefits and public services, e.g. subsidized housing, public transport, etc.), a lack of infrastructure, and poor education."
Actually, poverty is an institutionalized social engineering process that has always been necessary to support a wealthy upper class.
Rant Warning ============
Poverty is a primary necessity in any empire civilization, as it provides the desperation needed to create minions and petty criminals out of your average, otherwise honest, civilians.
Without minions, the wealthy would need to seek professional assistance for activities such as espionage and assassination, and pay premium mercenary prices for all those armed guards patrolling their estates.
Without petty criminals, crime would be nearly invisible, since the real criminals, who work for the wealthy, are never arrested or exposed to public awareness.
One of the main reason that Drugs are still illegal is to provide the necessary level of daily "crime" needed to keep the public scared shitless and willing to put up with more and more minions in Blue walking the street.
As the wealthy take more of the public wealth, it becomes necessary to increase this level of fear, and so Terrorists were born to create greater desperation and fear and futility and increase the sale of drugs and thus increase the NEED for more Blue Clad Minions.
Poverty creates the desperation and drive for normal people to risk everything to sell drugs in the hopes for a get rich quick escape from poverty, and fuels the depression and futility necessary to drive the population to the use of those same drugs.
The actual winners in that war are of course the very same people who have the money to set up and carry out the vast distribution process needed for such a market - the wealthy rulers who control the economy and the wages and cost of products which maintains poverty at its optimum level.
Poverty is an absolutely necessary part of the process of public exploitation and cannot be erased or even lessened as long as criminals rule from the top of a civilization. It can only increase as the greed of those sucking the life blood out of humanity increases, and the need for more desperate minions and criminals thus increases.
Even more importantly to the wealthy is the fact that poverty creates the primary drive for citizens to become soldiers, because, for the wealthy, war is the greatest of all commercial opportunities.
If you look at any major war, you will note that just prior to the beginning of that war, the nations involved suddenly went through a short but nasty period of economic downturn.
This is entirely manufactured in order to create the additional desperation needed to get most men to join the army and fight a war.
Sadly, in order to eradicate poverty, one must eradicate wealth and that is absolutely impossible when half the world is already addicted to it, and that half rules.
Under normal circumstances, the Police will only steal vehicles that have a high re-sale value or that they themselves desire to own, and a clunker full of toxic waste or semi-dead cats does not register on the plus side of an accounting chart or represent anyone's dream-car, so it is highly unlikely that such vehicular subterfuge would succeed.
It is far more likely that they will instead fine you for some pollution citation and radio ahead to other cops on your homeward path, who will levy similar charges upon your vehicle, all the way home.
If Timothy Sinnegen faces no charges, then no laws were broken, thus the entire process is totally legal and will be repeated at will in the future.
The settlement is thus, nothing more than the tax payer once again footing the bill for a cash bribe to the victim of its own out-of-control law enforcement cowboys, to try and get her to stop bitching about being legally screwed over.
Since no laws were broken, then any internal investigation will find just that, that no laws were broken - once again.
In plain words, activities that would under any circumstance be seen as criminal if they were done by a citizen, are totally legal when done by law enforcement.
