Assuming you're of the latter, I'm interested in what you have to gain from this, because no intelligent citizen of *any* country would want their government to have this type of power, yet you seem more than just apathetic about it, you seem *pleased*. How does this not set off alarms in your head? I can't understand how you reconcile the two statements: "Keep in mind that the domain was seized because it is property used to commit crimes." and "It's not necessary to ever file any criminal charges.". How can they say a crime has been committed without accusing someone of a crime? Isn't it innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law?
You either do not realize or do not care that limitless "free speech" rights can have some pretty horrendous consequences. Maybe that's Ok with you, not me however.
I agree wholeheartedly! Just typing the words "child pornography" should immediately result in the death penalty because if I copied and paste those words into google, I might find actual child pornography! Free speech speech is pro-CP! Down with free speech!
Re: Re: Re: All the more reason to stay independent...
I frequent this site and I feel like I have a pretty good grasp about what it's like to miss my family. I spent 4 years on a submarine, and my longest stretch of being underwater in a row is 58 days. We reset the counter when we surfaced in the middle of the ocean so someone could bring us food before we ran out, at 60 days. There are men who do it for 20 plus years. Next time you pull out a cell phone or turn on the radio try and remember that you get to make money doing what you love, and you have it better than you think.
I have to admit, I was being intentionally snarky, even though I knew what you meant. Except about actors not being artists. That was real. :) On the other hand, I'm pretty sure you knew what HothMonster meant, too.
I happen to agree with HM, that I consider a [true/real/pure] artist to be one where money/wealth/fame is a side-effect of the creation of art, not the goal. Mr. Monster and I could be alone in this belief, but somehow I suspect not.
Completely ignoring the fact that you cherry picked a suspected plagiarizer, a deaf musician, a philosopher (artist?) an actress (I hardly consider someone who plays pretend all day as an 'artist, maybe that's just me) and an artist that would have been sued into oblivion if he attempted his art today as your example of 'Real artists', all I have to say is [Citation needed]. :)
Only if the vast majority engages in sustained, irreversible civil disobedience.
If the government takes something that a majority of the population does not feel is wrong and makes it illegal, it will most certainly pan out as it was described above. (See: The American Prohibition)

I do not mean to condescend, but what on earth makes you feel that you, a very anonymous coward, are handing anyone their ass? You come off as a petulant 8 year old child on your best days and as a hormone-fueled tween with keyboard courage on your worst. You are obviously not swaying anyone to seeing your point of view-- even if you were making all the sense in the world, (hint: you're not) your delivery and childishness ruin any credibility you might have had.
I enjoy reading other points of view, and actively seek them out online. For some reason, the people who come to TD with opposing views act like children. Even professionals with opposing points of view can't seem to keep it civil in their posts. This does not help you or your cause. It certainly prevents you from handing anyone their ass. Pro-tip: You don't hand someone their ass by calling them names.
I'm still curious as to what you hope to gain by posting here.
Don't you ever get tired of typing out this slander? Never once has Mike ever said he loves piracy, or that he even condones piracy-- he has only stated that copyright holders, while fully allowed by law to go after pirates, would be better off leveraging it into increased profit.
If you don't agree (and it's quite clear you don't) then fine, but don't you have better, more constructive things you could be doing?
If you have children, would you encourage them to behave as you do? I think it unlikely. Try and grow up and remain civil, please.
I know Mike doesn't need the likes of one random dude on the internet to defend him, I'm just tired of reading your bullshit. I trust next time you contribute here, you'll attempt to bring something to the table.
I'm curious: How would you feel if this happened to you? Let's say, France feels you've broken one of their laws and seizes your domain. You get no notice, nor an explanation. You only make money from ads and donations-- barely able to pay your server costs. You know little to nothing of French law, *and* your site is legal here in the US.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I had an argument like this
shit! uh... err.. ah ha! But that would never work, because all the tubes would get clogged and we'd have 1's and 0's coming back up through our monitors, spilling on the floor.
How much money has been spent on Operation in Our Sites? That's taxpayer money, and should be counted as money we've lost.
How much money has the **AA spent on lawyers and on lobbying efforts? That money could have been spent on financing new artists. (Let's ignore the fact that they'd finance the least common denominator of 'artist' for a low risk, high gain return, for sake of argument)
How much time has been spent at public schools (again, on our dime) 'teaching' children that sharing is wrong?
How will we calculate the number of people who may have been turned off from producing content because of the thicket of copyright laws?
I dunno, Mike, do you think anywhere on the original study they asked them to be reasonable? In fact, it seems to me that if the IP Maximalists were in the habit of being reasonable, we wouldn't be having this survey. If we want a *real* comparison, those words should be edited out. :)
