Glad to see you picked this one up, i've been cheerleading it ever since i saws the speech a few days ago. As usual, Doctorow speaks directly to the heart of the matter. The scary thing is just how easily the whole applecart could be upset...if we can't even manage to get past the content industry's, then by the time the big players start feeling threatened the legal precedents will have all been set, the fight will be lost, and we can merrily screw off into a dark endless interregnum of corporate serfhood.
At the base is the Holy Conversion to New Formats... moving forward into eternity, uploaded to every Platform of the Human Condition. we shall make of Our data, an immortality, preserving all to that final point of Singularity, the ultimate Omega, where all data shall at last be free with no restraints or boundaries. All possibility manifest in digital form, forever and ever, worlds without end.
DRM is a great evil, it shackles the data, enslaves its soul to a single, fallible, version...one which can easily find itself Unreadable, by He Who is Called ROOT. There can be no greater sin, than data lost to humanity due to those who would lock down knowledge for selfish ends.
The lads over there have been fighting the war for a long time. I suggest checking out Cory Doctorw's speech, regarding the coming war on general computing. He makes some great arguments for what the next 100 years are going to look like as the REALLY big entrenched interests get into the Content Industry hotseat.
The day Monsanto realizes that gene mod organisms can be printed out with a usb powered fabber should be an interesting one.
The internet has been all over Lamar Smith for MONTHS, since killing the Paul legalization bill. (smith is the head of the committee it went to and the one who made the call that it would never get a hearing). Nothing i've seen his name attached to since gives me any indication that Lamar is aware of anyone whose name isn't on a large check.
Or.. they could do what reasonable, rational netizens do to educate people, they build their own bloody extension, that people can choose to use. i'm sure someone, somewhere would use it.
I'm not sure why people are crying. forget about the dvd's. just pay 7 bucks for a btguard account. That plus a 7 dollar streaming netflix account should be everything you'll ever need.
