if there is any chance of confronting ms's patents, someone will have to stand up to them and face a challenge from MS. If they can survive a legal battle and invalidate some or all of ms' ip, everyone will benefit from it. otherwise it will strengthen their claims, and who knows how valid the claims really are until they are challeneged.
another thing about touch screens - why do people think it is more ergonomic (than a mouse for example)? have you tried holding your hand(s) suspended over a surface for any amount of time? imagine working like this for a whole day? youll be begging for a mouse.
ive always thought having two mice hooked up, with two pointers that can grab and stretch stuff etc... would be cool. prolly more practical too. and no finger smudges!
im thinking some cool games could be based on such.
you could probably find instances of any country outsourcing to any other country... going to be a low bidder somewhere. ive heard of indian firms outsourcing to the US.
but i hope this grows, mexico needs an ecnomy boost so badly.
12k sounds like a lot, but if you even spend your own time on it, considering a decent software person can bill almost 1k per day, that only allows for 12 days of one person's time to put something together... nada mucho.
of course he probably didnt spend 12k physical dollars... or at least i hope not ;)
Ive called 911 a number of times, from cell phone, and strange thing is they ask what city im calling from/for... i guess that should do the trick for voip as well?
blue dude - i used *legal* tax avoidance measures to avoid paying just under half of my income from last year. dont you dare call tax evasion evil. stealing my very hard earned income to pay for God knows what IS evil. Sure, you education is a good cause.. but why am i forced to pay for it whether i want to or not. But as a law-abiding citizen i pay what I must, but not a cent more.
please excuse me while i get back to work on a sunday so i can continue paying for your schooling
guess im tossed back into ye olde cd world, bought me a new hotrod last year and... doh, nice 6 cd changer but NO mp3 sppt... you mean i can only burn a few songs on one of these??? ;)

on the topic of rim, that company is amazing.. i owned their stock back in 00 and did ok but fully expected they wouldnt exist in a few years once bigger players got into the mobile email bandwagon.. and here they are still the top of the pile
i havent run the numbers to see what that stock would be worth now... ;)
everything comes back to having a whitelist of safe sites.. the port number/TLD/proto/whatever is just another way of segregating the good from the bad. And since nobody seems to like the idea of government censoring this for us, then the obvious answer is for an independent organization to do so.
thus: exactly what we have now, babysitter software that can run on either your computer or home router or at the ISP. if you dont like how it filters, you are free to disagree and get a different "brand" of filter.
anything else (ports/protocols/etc) winds up being filtered by a single (monopoly) body, which will never satisfy everone in deciding what is decent AND in policing the content to keep its lists up to date.
so we're back to the same, sorta lame, solutions we already have today... until i perfect my skin detection filter ;)
Ive always wished theyd have it free so I could use it (no way id pay that much for something Id barely use), but i hate to admit I think theyve done the right thing... by charging they keep the "riff-raff" out who might wind up camping for extended hours just to get the net.. and if theyre so cheap that theyre camping somewhere for net access, its not as likely theyll be spending $ on coffee either.
I like the "off peak hours" argument but wouldnt these guys wind up hanging out during peak just as samel? thus making peak overly crowded, a worse situation that having slow off-peaks.
but the main reason i think they have it right - the dang places are always full anyway. I see small coffe shops open and close (despite my frequenting them) all the time, but SB's just keep adding new ones.. ive never seen one close. Read it here first - the next "big tobacco" will be SB- theres no normal explanation for that many people spending that much for that mid-range coffee, that frequently AND for that long (both up and down economies)... there MUST be some nicotine or some other addictive substance in those drinks! ;) ;)
From my personal experience as an inventor and holder of several patents, I have to say Mike is correct on this topic. Some of the patents I have were simply filed just because "every one else is doing it" and really should never have been granted. In the niche industry Im in, there are a couple large companies who stockpile IP and actively shut down smaller businesses or force extremely burdensome licensing terms for IP they "own" that is so ridiculously obvious and simple, its almost the equiv of claiming to own oxygen.. and which whould never hold up under a real legal challenge. But they do this because they can.. and they have the legal funds to put any challengers out of business.
So, not speaking hypothetically but out of personal experience, I can say the patent system is being used for exactly the opposite of its original intent. Instead of offering the small inventor a chance at turning an invention into a successful venture, the innefficiencies of the system have turned it into a tool for the larger organizations to use for killing off smaller inventors/companies.
I would gladly trade in my patent collection, including the ones I caondier valueable, for a revised patent system that would reject the garbage that is allowed to issue today. I am nearly (but not quite) ready to say we'd be better off without a patent system at all.
just had a thought... if every possible ridiculously simple idea in the universe is currently being patented, does that mean in 20 years, every ridiculously simple idea that has ever existed will have been patented and already expired, thus everyone will be free to do interesting things instead wasting time and money making lawyers rich?
I think ill retire for now and plan to go back to work in 20 yrs ;)
