"The damage isn't just in the doing, it's in others seeing them do it and thinking they can get away with it to."
Praytell how exactly others would hear the music and instantly know it isn't properly licensed. I also don't know anyone who goes to a strip club and talks about the music.
"Think about it. Does a rape victim just stand there silently and think "I'll complain about it later". No, they'll scream and shout, because of the trauma of the incident."
You are highly delusional with that frame of logic I have to say. This isn't a woman getting raped in an alley, this was under "legal" search. A first reaction might not be to scream but to try horribly to process what is happening and justify it in some way.
I know my opinion might not be shared but I think the company has a right to pursue this. Perhaps the CFAA is the wrong channel, but destroying a component of something the company owns and replacing it is not an acceptable practice. That is just common sense.
The part of the story that sticks out to me is there doesn't seem to be any proof the defendant destroyed the drive. Just a claim that he did.
...Zach, I'm really baffled how no one can see what your actual point is. The point is it is a social experience on a current event you and your friends' engage in. Syfy took it away.
This isn't a point that Zach needs new friends, or a new channel to watch, or a new hobby. It means that he needs more options than a $100 cable bill. Syfy is only losing a fan in this way. Correct me if I'm wrong here!
Personally, I find much more strength and courage in the person that openly acknowledges things they are interested in versus people that have nothing better to do than rain on other peoples' parade for it.
So he and his friends watch Syfy and talk about it. Is that any different than what you presumably do, trolling over details of a comment that don't reflect the commentor's point?

Why don't you get off your high horse Pope? TV isn't even the point, it's the fact that friends socialize and this causes a barrier for him to engage. It is none of your business what they socialize about unless you are a part of that friendship.
His point is valid, whether or not you think he should like TV as much as he does. I'm sure there are interests you talk about with your friends that my circle of friends would laugh at you over. I personally don't like sports, and I think it is absolutely silly to watch grown men play a sport you have no affiliation to other than living in a close proximity of land. However, what I don't do is run around trolling about how I think it's a waste of time, because it's not, it is simply an interest people choose to engage in.
I wish the MPAA would realize that if they were to make a service that allows me to stream new content; hell, even relatively new content (a matter of months rather than years), I would be willing to pay upwards of 50 bucks for a streaming service to provide this. I'm here, I'm waiting, but until I can have the same convenience that is Netflix legitimately for more current programming, consider your new stuff pirated.
I am about to be doing the same thing. I currently have ATT U-Verse and am paying $140 for internet and cable (2 tv's, HD, etc). The problem is I'm not sure I've actually turned my cable on in 2+ months. There is no alternative to the internet speed I am current getting, the best I can do is switch to DSL that is half the speed, but 30 bucks a month. Thinking that is the way to go, not because I can't pay the $140 but because I just don't want to anymore.
It's funny that you assume users of digital content will revert back to CD acquisition. In reality all it will lead to is illegal downloading. I have not purchased a CD in over 7 years and the idea of going back to that because they choose to hide content I'm trying to obtain is hilarious.
I have cracked virtually ever PC game I have ever bought. DRM is just a nuisance. Games need a more flexible pricing model as well, instead of "I made a game, hence it costs 60 dollars"
