All software is an algorithm. This is a proven fact. By law, algorithms can not be patented. All software patents are illegal. It's about time the government enforces the law.
All business methods are algorithms. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It doesn't matter what you call it, it's still an algorithm. And unpatentable.
..take out a patent on how to apply for a patent. While you're at it, take out a patent on how to sue for patent infringement and another for suing for copyright infringement. The patent system is so messed up you're likely to get them. :D
Mr. Vixie seems to have missed one point. Soon there are going to be two DNS, one for those inside the US, and one for those outside. And pretty soon, two will become several. After that, there will be no more coordination of domain names. Every country or region will assign its own names. The internet just won't be broken. It'll be fractured beyond repair.
Of course, it could be something more sinister. The military could have turn it back on to intercept the messages the rebels are sending to coordinate their efforts. IIRC, the UK police did something similar in their kettling of demonstrators.
All software patents are illegal. It has been proven that all software is an algorithm and patent law forbids the patenting of algorithms. It's about time the courts got off their lazy asses and enforced the law.
It's the company that provides the best service that rises to the top, regardless of how many patents, trade secrets, copyrights it has. You can do away with all of them and the world would can much. (Except that a lot of lawyers will have to change careers.)
I looks like a political statement to me and in Canada, all political statements are exempt from trademarks, copyrights, patents, language laws, and other laws and regulations that would prevent a person from expressing their viewpoint.
@goo picker upper: I remember reading about a proposed hospital gurney that was similar but used two sheets, one on top for the patient and another on the bottom so it wouldn't foul in the bed sheets. Since both sheets came out of the middle of the device at the same rate, they wouldn't foul with each other either.
So we should just give up without a fight? Besides, I not restricting all big money contributions, just some of it. For example, Microsoft should not be able to make contributions but Bill Gates can. Only people should be participating in politics.
More than the IP laws need reformation. The whole concept of a corporation needs reform. A corporation is a thing, not a person. It should not be able to participate the the political process. No contributions to candidates, no hiring of lobbyists. If a corporation needs political representation, its shareholders can do that themselves.
Oh, did I mentioned that no corporation should be able to own another, either directly through stock or indirectly through some financial instrument like derivatives. Only people can own a corporation, who can do their own political campaigning, personally.
"Also we tend to disagree with a straight 'give it away and pray' sort of setup that Pogue went with here."
Of course. Remember PBS? And what a big flop that was? Well, they were warned. No-one can run a TV network on just donations. There are not enough people in the country stupid enough to give away that kind of money. But the FCC went ahead and granted them a license. A total disaster. But not only did the investors lose their shirts, such a mistake has set back the quality of TV programming, especially high-quality education programming for years. You would think people learned their lesson. ;)
I gave up reading Scientific America when I read an article that compare the modern day levels of CO2 with levels of CO2 and methane released by volcanoes in ancient times. If you don't know why that's so wrong, look up the effects of methane as a greenhouse gas.
All software is an algorithm. This is a proven fact. The patent law clearly states that algorithms can not be patented. All software patents are illegal.
All business procedures are algorithms. A process is a method that produces items of wealth. Not money, not value, not reduced cost. Wealth. Otherwise, it's an algorithm and is not patentable.
The record labels are trying to pass legislation to get a world-wide monopoly on the music industry. This is just another red herring, to convince politicians that they represent the best interests of musicians and the general public even though they are required by law to maximize their profits. But, of course, only a communist terrorist would think that they put their profits before the interests of others.
What's really killing the music industry is the cellphone. With today's teenagers talking and testing their friends, they can't listen to music the same amount as their parents. The industry has failed because it failed to identify its competition. And until it does, it's doomed.
Of course traffic infractions won't go down if you don't enforce the fines. Here in Ontario, all traffic fines are accumulated by the vehicle owner, and if you don't pay your fines right away, you get slapped with a late charge and you get to pay it when you renew the plates. Even if you sell the vehicle for scrap, the ownership isn't transferred until all the fines are paid. In other words, the scrapyard won't deal with you until the fines are paid.
If you have red-light cameras, you need to get serious about collecting the fines.

Quite the opposite. All FLOSS projects want your complaints. They call them bug reports and they're used to improve the quality of the software.
Those that tell you, "You only get what you pay for," are trying to sell you their junk at absurdly-marked-up profits. Don't believe them.
