Just having a movie isn't illegal. You have to distribute it. Now, one *might* suggest that uploading a movie to your personal cloud drive is illegal, but I don't think that's clear cut by any means, so uploading it to dropbox is probably legal. Distributing the hash file? No more illegal than a torrent file. So, when I dropship the hash file, have i made a copy? What laws were broken?
This isn't meant as sarcasm, just asking the question.
Sure it is. Now it's trivial find out if someone has a copy of a file. Would you want someone you don't know be able to determine what files you have on your computer? If you care about privacy, the answer would be "no".
Yes, it's trivial to determine if someone on dropbox has the same *exact* file as you. You don't know *who* has it, nor do you know *how many* people have it, but my the gods, you know what *someone* has it. I fail to see the security concern.
If you upload youMeAndFUDMakesThree.pdf and I've already got it, you're not actually uploading it, you're just having it linked to the copy already on their server. You don't know that *I* have it. It doesn't tag it as "linked from Joe's Dropbox", does it?
I'm only guessing, but I imagine the problem would be that it would be almost impossible to hunt down the so-called infringers. You'd 'dropship' a json file and the file would appear in your dropbox folder. No IP address to pretend equals a person to sue people, it's just there, already on the Dropbox server.
What are they going to do, go to Dropbox and ask for everyone that has myMovie.avi in their Dropbox folder? I didn't upload it, I didn't download it, I just tricked Dropbox into linking it to my Dropbox folder. Seems legally messy.

Got a link handy that has more info on that global warming data? I'm interested in getting the whole picture. If not, I'm sure google will be my friend.
Am I to understand that one side says violent games are harmful to kids and the other side says a law banning them would be unconstitutional? Why would you need to publish a paper on violence to know about the first amendment? They aren't even comparing the same things. Tomfoolery, I say!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: It's tough to compete with other business models that don't pay or STEAL
Piracy, like all theft, is a negative sum game once you look at all the costs and benefits.
I find it quietly hilarious that you keep calling it theft, considering the subject of the article.
As an aside, you call it a negative sum game, but do you take into account the positive benefits of the increased exposure? A quick search will show study after study that says that piracy, if intelligently leveraged, will lead to greater income than the lack of piracy.
Re: It's tough to compete with other business models that don't pay or STEAL
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. If it it, goto (1), if it isn't, please goto (2).
(1) Well played, sir. I will attach a gold star next to your name on my poster board of names of funny people on the internet. If you get 5 stars, you get to feed the class goldfish!
(2) So, you're complaining that, if all music were free to download, we would have to make a decision of what music we listened to based solely on personal tastes and the musical talent of the artists? I, too, pray that the hellish musical landscape you've described for us never truly comes to pass. Indeed, I can barely control my urge to scream in terror!
I'm more interested in having my art taken for what it is as I intended it upon it's creation.
It occurs to me that I have no idea what you're talking about. How does downloading something versus paying for it *not* take your art for what it is intended upon it's creation? I'm honestly confused. Since this seems to be the crux of your entire argument, I feel that it is important that I understand it.
If you chose to read the entire book, from beginning to end then yes, I think you should offer some form of compensation.
So, you seriously feel that my appreciation of your art should be completely disconnected from me paying for your art? I'm not sure what world you live in, but hop on down from that glittery unicorn and grab an economics 101 book. That's not how the real world works anymore.
Did you read Twilight? I didn't.
I did. I didn't like it, but then again, I didn't waste any money on it, just my time. (Which, if you ask my employer, is worth a good deal of money- imagine that!)
Are you looking for a guarantee that all things will meet your preferences at all times?
No, no guarantee is required or desired, as the current/future state is such that I have quick and easy access to any book I'd like to read. If your book is good enough that I want to read more of your works, I'll invest money in you in the hopes that you write more. If your book seems like it was ghost written by Snooki, you won't receive a cent from me. Thems the breaks, pal.
If you are sensitive enough to how your time might be "wasted" the easy answer is to simply not to consume art that requires upfront payment.
Ignoring the fact that you seem to have the customer/merchant relationship all screwed up, *I'd* like to point out that I don't consume any art that requires up front payment. So if your book isn't available without up-front payment, you really have lost that potential sale everyone blames piracy for, haven't you? (Think about it.)
Dare I ask for the title of your (in your opinion) best published work? I'm always looking for a good book to read. :)
You said you dont care if it is before or after, but you want them to pay. So, if i downloaded your book and read it and thought it made Twilight look like a masterpiece, are you suggesting that i should pay you for wasting my life? If that *is* what you mean, how do you cope with having no central nervous system? If it isn't what you mean, and you agree that i shouldn't pay for a book i don't like, then what is your stance on me passing along your book to someone else, who might enjoy it? What about 5 other people? 25? 50? 500?
Competition hurts people *and* causes lost sales, too. Are you one of those no-good, competition-hating communists my grandpappy told me to shoot first and ask questions later?
