Quality journalism is still alive, but very scarce. In most cases they just repeat the news they are given and that matches their political bias. (Sorry but polls have shown that a majority of journalists are liberal. Which means they tend to show support and story time to what they want.) So the problem is that if a bias is shown people turn off that outlet.
If the newspapers are doing anything but rewriting AP stories they could charge for more in-depth analysis on trends or stocks to watch or etc..
Monetize what is scarce. Not the bull that everyone has access to. In the internet age access to information is very wide and deep, so don't charge for what someone can get elsewhere.
Re: Re: Of course you are being watched! This is news?
Don't be stupid. It's not about whether you do or don't have anything to hide, it's about whether or not the government should have the power to monitor you without proper cause. When a government has that power they will abuse it. Sure today they will use it to do good! But tomorrow you might say something they don't like and they then FIND a reason to make you a criminal.
Google over the last couple years has had to agree to all kinds of arrangements with a lot of different content creators. The reason they may be restricting content is because they are going to have to pay through the nose to those MPAA-RIAA goons if they allow set top boxes to display the content on YouTube unfettered.
I really do think there is a reason for this that is not clearly or openly SHOWN.
I am currently and never have been a defender of any company that seeks to control us the consumer from getting access to content we are rightfully entitled to.
Google has been a fairly good company at defending the rights of us the people. So I need more information before jumping down their throat about access.
But seriously I really don't understand the blackout rule. I believe it must be an agreement forced on to the NFL by the team owners to maximize revenue.
I have for a long time been a big audiophile. (I spent over $3k on a audio set up 15 years ago.) And in some ways I do agree with you. The simple fact is that MOST people don't really hear the extra range and depth and they don't want to pay for it. It's like a color blind person paying for a rainbow painting. And unfortunately if musicians and music sellers want to make the most money they must appeal to the widest group of buyers.
PS. I think this is why people pay to go see concerts because they get all the range and depth they miss in the CDs.
I went back to college to get some new skills and I am a online student. Well they are MAKING us buy only eBooks, no physical book with out being charged extra (the cost of the books is built in to the course cost). I have complained and complained to the point that they have switched three times to different vendors for the eBooks but still I have to pay extra to actually get the physical book.
It pisses me off so much because first you have nothing to sell after the course if you don't want to keep it, second who wants to read a 1027 page text book on a computer screen. I don't and I have been using computer for over 20 years so I am no Luddite. I just find it easier to read and use (yes use) a physical book for studying.
Oh, one last point the eBooks cost that same as the physical text book.
The issue has me so mad that I will probably switch schools after the semester.
Don't you love that you are now so important that the RIAA has assigned shills to first post and refute your comments!!
It the best thing ever!! I have been reading Techdirt for at least 5+ years and you have influenced my opinion on Copyright and Properties rights. And I would like to say that although I do not always agree with your comments, I do agree with them at least twice as often as I don't.
Keep the fire to the Dumb Masses about what they are giving up by letting the RIAA stay around.
I have an iPhone and I am also in IT so jailbreaking would be nothing. But I have never jailbroke my phone because it was never an issue. I could get most any app I wanted to do what I want. But I also hate DRM with a purple passion. But Apple is getting just plain stupid.
I will never buy another iPhone it's just to restrictive.
