Re: Re: Re: Re: is enforcing "history libel" only a bad thing when *THEY* do it?
That. I hope I didn't pass the impression of disregarding or saying it wasn't that much of the Holocaust itself but rather the censorious aura that formed around the subject. You can't put in check parts of history without being either censored by laws or via violent reaction from society. You know, nuances and stuff.
Re: Meanwhile, Israel ACTUALLY murdering protesters with "butterfly" bullets.
Hmm, so now TD MUST talk about every nuance of every topic even if it's outside the tech scope, eh? Why don't you go build your blog about it? Not that I'm not saying what you said is without merit concerning the issue but TD is under n o obligation to delve into parts of the subject they don't want to. There are plenty of other blogs you can read that do.
It's much easier to go after the platform instead of effectively monitoring the platforms for real illegal stuff. If anybody wanted to solve anything they would go after those who are infringing any law or committing any crime and make the threat of being caught be a deterrent. What I see are empty words and a lot of moronic grandstanding but no real action. Sadly, it will be the great majority that use the platforms within the law that will pay the price, including those who are most vocal about blaming them.
Re: is enforcing "history libel" only a bad thing when *THEY* do it?
I've read stuff that question the numbers and some other facts about the Holocaust (not denying it existed, just questioning the winners version). We created some sort of holy aura around the Jewish that doesn't represent the whole truth. Meanwhile Israel is out there promoting a genocide in a territory that was artificially settled and everybody just ignores it.
I guess if you bring such things into a debate you'd be a criminal there? And I'm betting some people will fail at reading comprehension and assume I'm some sort of anti-Semitic idiot. Note to you: I'm not, I do believe the Holocaust was a monumental fail for humanity and we should study about it to avoid repeating the atrocities but we must be critical as well. The winning part always tends to build a "more fitting" narrative to whatever happened.
Re: 'You are free to lavish all the praise you want on them'
It's interesting. During the formation/discovery of the territory that would later become the state I live in we had expeditions formed by folks we call "Bandeirantes". Your regular school history text book will paint them as some sort of awesome, courageous men but I have been reading stuff recently that show they weren't those heroes but rather a bunch of dipshits that enslaved indians, raped their women, pillaged and did generally awful stuff in their way. You can't deny they were instrumental in forming the state but you can bring into attention their violations and recognize it was not right.
This has "China wants to hide atrocious stuff carried out by those martyrs not to taint the image of the current state" printed all over.
"If historians discover facts that conflict with the official narratives, the facts must go."
World Historian: "This [insert Chinese govt-approved martyr here] has a long documented history of being a dipshit."
Chinese historian: "This [the same martyr above] was a hero that could come back from the dead and who could shot energy blasts from his hand to purify Japanese barbarians!"
We the Nerds: "So that's the Chinese name for Goku?"
It's another face of the "twist statistics until they say what you want them to say". Build a heavily biased survey and use the obviously skewed results to push your own authoritarian... Er security-oriented efforts.
If these morons didn't cause actual damage by eroding herd protections I would say "let natural selection get them" but since they pose a real threat for other kids and people I'm glad laws are being put in place to at the very least make other people safer. Likewise, they are as abhorrent as imbeciles like the kkk and the likes and I'd love if they would just shut up but since I want everybody's free speech protected.
It's pretty annoying when you find yourself supporting obnoxious people.
Need to let the dust settle a bit before pushing for more bullshit, no? I do agree with Mike that people are blaming Facebook alone for all the evils in the world when there are much worse known offenders out there that should be receiving heat as well but at the very least let's hope it becomes an example that dissuades bad practices.
At least nobody died. I can imagine some PDs in the US shooting and then comming with the excuse "oopsie, the guy tried to resist" even if the shot was point blank in the back of the head.
Re: Do you EVER, for even ten seconds, worry about GOOGLE?
Do you ever manage not to be a total failure? Just type Google in the site search box and you'll have plenty of articles condemning Google for their mistakes. Of course that would crush your strawman and you'd no longer be able to practice onanism with it.
It's still censorship which seems to be forbidden by their constitution.
But I agree that this specific argument would fly if he was using some stuff to prevent dns or ip blocking and the content was still blocked then it could mean they are sniffing into your packets or something.
How about don't remove anything unless it's clearly a crime and even then if it's a crime in a country and not in another then just filter the former out. And tell sensitive people they can go fuck themselves and just hide the thing they don't like?
It's pretty simple, if it's a crime then hide it (or remove if it's one of those universal things like child porn) and go after the goddamn source. Otherwise just let people hide it and make their own 'feeds' rosy unicorn filled things.
If countries like Germany want to push ethereal 'fake news' or 'hate speech' laws then filter the heck out of their content but let other more mature countries have the thing censorship free.
Keep at it, you are succeeding greatly at making people mad and pushing them towards muni broadband. And tougher regulation. California and NY are waving!
We need to implement "panic passwords". Or even fingerprints. If you input a panic 'unlocking' method the device will automatically brick itself while frying the storage because full wipe would take too long.
The only way you'll get standards adopted or security taken seriously will be when it hurts in the pockets. We can make it hurt now via regulations or we can wait until it hurts later because it will get out of control pretty badly. That's the choice we need to do now. I have this feeling it will not involve preemption.
