The buggy-whip / car thing is always trotted out as an example, and it's a good one. But what about railways? Railways seemed like buggy-whips for a while - why bother to save them when there's a better way to travel (car) that offers more freedom?
There are MANY industries - that just really aren't needed anymore. Not that they didn't have quite a need at some point but... TV Repair for instance. There's still a few that will be repaired, but it's so cheap to get new ones now... All but the newest are usually tossed.
Lead Pipe industry is another one.
Lead Paint production.
Tubes for Car Tires.
Pony Express.
Wooden Ship Building.
Cannon Ball manufacturing.
As technology changes, we must adjust. Even the music industry has played a large role in making technology was it is today. Aren't they whining about the loss of 8-Track, Vinyl Records, and Cassettes too?
Why can't they innovate some. It's a gold mine waiting to be tapped, but they are still panning for gold in the creek, rather than buying heavy mining equipment and tunneling..
Consider all of the extra 'energy' that wasn't needed because he's driving the same car. Over that period of time, the average person might have went through 5 cars - let's say.
That would have a cost in the energy to get the materials for 5 cars, transport 5 cars, etc, etc.
So in the end, I bet he's consumed less resources by keeping a single car than most.
They can't just declassify the information just because it's publicly available. Executive Order 13526 signed by President Obama in December09 prevents just that sort of situation.
It would be far nicer, if 'laws' like that were actually ran through congress instead of like 'decrees by Caesar'.
Guns are 'banned' for felons right now - yet they still have them.
Many 'drugs' are 'banned' - yet they are still out there.
Child porn is 'banned' so is copyright infringement. So what they are saying is that if someone does something that's already 'banned' they will in turn 'ban' them from the internet?
Well if the 'ban' worked in the first place - then no 'banning' would need to be done, since the first 'ban' works, right?
Re: Isn't this good news? No decision is better than a bad one.
I can retain some *slight* hope that the FCC retains a tiny bit of integrity and will eventually declare cable / DSL common carriers as they should be, and neutralize the heck out of 'em.
I commend your optimism - but that's likely all it will ever be - sadly - hope.
Various corporations/elites own the companies that this would effect and by proxy - own the politicians who will make the decision.
I think when history looks back on the demise of our great nation, it will be said one of the biggest problems was allowing corporate dollars to run the show in politics. I guess we can sum up our current political climate with a great demotivator!!
Mistakes: It could be that the purpose our your life is only to serve as a warning to others.
^^ That pretty much 'defines' our current political climate.
"I find it ridiculous when anyone take an issue and pins "left wing" or "right wing" to the sides when the real issue is about neither. That's a weak attempt at dismissing important arguments by focusing on the politicization of it, rather than the substance"
That's par for the course 'procedure' now for the media and politicians. They have to try and keep people polarized - as it allows them to get away with more behind closed doors.

Re: You know what this means....
It's pointless. There really needs to be some law stating that any 'normal' word - like Tuesday CAN'T be a part of any trademark, etc..
It's not as catchy as they might think it is, lol.

But what happens when the corporations that have practically taken over the market are running the government?
Then the perceived 'government safeguards' really are nothing more than corporate policies applied to the public. Right?

One could also put forth the argument:
"if I've done nothing wrong, why are you concerned with snooping on me?".
It's the WHOLE core of the concept "innocent until proven guilty" - but that doesn't seem to be too popular anymore.
Clearly; the concept of "if you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to hide" - assume guilt by default - it has to.
