Again, where do current laws fail to address the revenge porn issue? Identify the culprit for leaking private stuff, punish him/her accordingly and move on. The problem is, once on the internet you can't really know if you are downloading something that is a result of some crime (put aside child porn for instance) so just live with it. Get the leaker, punish and move on, eventually it'll be just one more homemade porn in a vast ocean of others.
Google is a company. Even if it says it won't be evil there are always the profits, the shareholders to please.
If society isn't willing to boycott companies for decisions that aren't good (for lack of a better word) then we have to just eat it. We should have imposed financial punishment when they bowed to China censorious pressure, when they accepted working with tyrannical regimes (ie: Federation Internationale de l'Automobile when they took their busines to Bahrein) etc etc.
I'm also guilty of it to some extent even though I have been trying to do my best. I stopped buying from companies that have been caught using slave labor for example. Some are easier to avoid, others are much harder.
And as long as it can be used to punish whistleblowers, it will never be changed.
If we want that changed we have to both vote in people that are willing to add accountability and protect rights AND we need to keep close track of what they are doing and vote them out permanently the moment they get soiled by interests other than what they promised. Ok, you want to get corporate money? Make good use while you are in your position because you are never getting elected enough. I know it's some sort of hard to attain dream I'm talking about but that's the only way and even if some people will keep voting with their anuses if we manage to get a critical mass of people voting well it should act as a good deterrent.
Also I'd like to leave this:
Politicians are like baby diapers. Both should be changed frequently. For the same reason.
Colleagues around me are using Sci-hub almost exclusively nowadays. It's not something publishers can contain. They'll have to greatly scale down their profits and improve their services if they want to survive in the future. There are many in the academic community that are even willing to host mirrors or decentralized servers for the site. I suspect there will be a lot of blood before publishers stop their predatory practices and start being competitive. I'd pay a small netflix-like subscription for easy access to a diversity of academic works such as sci-hub. Many would.
A MAFIAA, you can't touch anything without making it a hideous monster can you? Music exist despite your best efforts to kill it under the guise of saving it.
This is just going to end up driving older works into oblivion. The worst thing that could happen to arts.
California approves and is moving into reinstating NN. In a more comprehensive way. The ISPs are in pure despair. Somebody said before, there are few things sweeter than monopolistic telco tears.
"why not find other ways to fund the development of genomic treatments? "
That. Research into it and let the generics use at will. Also, I think we should have some type of universal healthcare provided by the government but that would be too Communist of me (even if capitalist countries all around have such model in place).
I wonder if they actually have the keys. It goes counter to their claims and they could have avoided a lot of trouble by striking a backroom deal with Putin. I could be wrong of course.
If you choose to ignore some portion of society that wants to impose their ideas on you then you can't just complain later when you get thoroughly screwed. I will ignore some white supremacist moron up to the point they start making their rounds into important democratic positions. And discourse is poisoned to the point you mentioned.
Censorship has been creeping in steadily for the last few years after a pretty good time when the Internet made everything more open and transparent. Though the pitch now is not against censorship, for most people it's about censorship against thing I agree with, the rest be damned.
The thing is, people who recognize there are different ways of thinking and different opinions tend both to respect these differences and generally don't try to impose their own way of thinking/living onto others via laws or whatever the means. And sadly they are not the majority in politics nowadays.
"We promised our users 100% privacy and would rather cease to exist than violate this promise. "
Full respect. This is what I'd expect from a company that has my trust. Considering Russia has the lion's share of Telegram usage this basically means they lost most of their user base. They've reached a special place along with Lavabit in my hall of respect and got many trust points.
It's not a hard exercise and all politicians should take it before suggesting or enacting some law regarding speech, freedom and other rights: if this law was active during the Nazi regime, would it be abused?
If the answer is yes then DON'T LET IT BECOME A FREAKING LAW.
In the end it'll be all a wasteland. Except for the countries that gives them the proverbial middle finger and sticks to the finger. Highly improbable, money is too sweet.
Sure, I've seen and used those but they haven't gone mainstream. I didn't express myself well. I would like alternatives that fully replace what we have currently, popularity and spread included. Not that those aren't good experiences.
It's about time the monopoly is disturbed by open source, more resilient alternatives. I wonder if a non-profit could spearhead such effort and keep it alive with donations. I'd donate.
