there's a solution to that last problem that is implemented in NZ.
i can't remember the details off the top of my head, annoyingly, but it basically amounts to most such bad practices triggering investigations and legal action where the plaintiff/prosecution is the government, for violating the various laws around such practice, not the individual in question. (this is, however, usually After a tribunal dealing with the specific case in question, as the event may be a one off screw up rather than anything else.)
there's more to it than this, of course. i just can't remember the details, as i said. it works pretty well though. (the legal system has all sorts of issues, but the low level tribunals all over the place where there is an arbitrator rather than a judge, who makes the outcome of such negotiations binding and has the ability to force an outcome if the parties cannot agree, and where failure to abide by the outcome lands you in court on charges over That rather than the original issue... it seems to help.)
no, it is stupid american spelling fail because somewhere along the way they've lost the ability to distinguish the sound of 'you' (that is, 'u') and the vowel in 'do' (that is, 'oo'. there's proper IPA symbals for these but they're a pain in the arse) and they've lost the fact that 'ado' is a word. (i've seen 'do' in 'make do' spelled 'due' a LOT as well)
basically they all sound the same, they get corrected for spelling these other words as 'do' enough times, they over correct, and we get this maddening nonsense.
the part that drives me nuts isn't even the error here, its the breaking of one of English's nice, consistent, standardized parts (and face it, it doesn't have enough of those) in favour of More Complex options. i mean, if you're going to screw up, at least screw up in the way that makes things make More sense rather than less.... :S
fear the pet rant. (the rant isn't particularly directed at El_Segfaulto. the correction is, but not the rant :D)
are these liberal and conservative economists basising their logic on the MASSIVELY FLAWED thinking that economics has been based on for the last couple of centuries or so? (may have changed in the last decade for all i know, of course, so i'm dubious to call it 'modern' and while it may properly be called 'classical', that invokes an irrelivant era)
because appeal to authority doesn't work when the authority is incompetent, which is Generally the case when such economics is applied to reality in any significant way beyond record keeping.
(which doesn't say much one way or the other about rent control, admittedly, but i do fail to see how in an environment with limited supply and ever increasing demand, Any action other than artificial restrictions from an outside source can prevent a consistent rise in price overall.)
ignoring that last line, that is actually quite likely to be part of the logic.
(here, used to be that he'd be completely unemployable in such a role if the first one was such a disaster... but only if it was a disaster for the people who hired him to do it and/or the people who are looking at hiring him this time. )

think that works better :D
(still not sure if it's perfect)
if by 'the government' you mean 'the US government in it's current incarnation' then it's very easy to agree with you.
if you mean the concept of government in general this statement is flat out wrong. Human nature ensures that any anarchy will, in relatively short order, default into small scale organised governments. if you're Lucky that means a city state with a good setup. far more likely it means warlords. in the latter case if you're Lucky, again, you end up with at least some leaders who consider more than their own enrichment and power to be important and they don't get completely owned, and you end up with a feudal system. if you're unlucky you end up with someone less pleasant on top and get some combination of authoritarian dictatorship on a conquering spree, assassination and civil war.
or you just get invaded by a neighbour who does still have a functional government. either way.
are Canadian government types 'federal' employees?
i ask purely due to a tendancy for people to use US terms for things from other countries and then other commenters to miss the fact that the events in question did not happen in the USA. (yes, even when it's right there in the title)
i would offer 1,0000,0000,0000 non-monies for an edit button.
that said, i can see good reason for not having one given how conversations here tend to go.
perhaps, instead, a 'correction' button?
let's you attach correction notes and such to the comment in a way that would not be confused with an actual reply, but doesn't change the original comment? (maybe a box within the comment's coloured background, rather than indenting and changing colour?)

Patronage seemed to work ok for those who were really good.
for anyone else, it's a hobby, side business, or useful skill that enhances whatever their actual trade is.
??? in this case being:
don't run the economy into the ground in such a way that you can't bail with your takings, or piss off enough of the wrong people badly enough that you get assassinated. (or thrown in jail, i suppose.)
i've encountered two responses to this:
"Stop telling God what to do!"
and
"Not only does God play dice, but the dice are loaded." (admittedly, the latter is from Alpha Centauri :D)
