can't remember if the Internet was a US thing or a joint US/other countries thing.
the US does have a long history of nicking other people's ideas and turning them into useful things though. (you know, that thing patents are designed to stop you doing?)
problem being that that only proves the ability to memorise trivia. not exactly a useless skill if properly applied, but hardly indicative of intelligence. just free time.
personally, i rate general mockery of absurd or silly people or view points as not quite the same thing as trolling.
the line between the two can be vague and fuzzy, however. one may or may not be a subset of the other and the difference is in a combination of methods and objectives.
i agree with your general points here, but i can't help but feel that some part of the specifics, or the implications of the specifics, is not quite right.
the sad part about techdirt often enough, unfortunately: a lot of the odd viewpoints/opinions/comments are self-satirising.
(i have no confidence that i expressed the thought correctly)
unmarked sarcasm and subtle mockery do not work in text form in a context where people actually hold (or claim to hold) the resulting views :S
well, assuming all actors within the environment do likewise, given that perfect order is equivalent to stasis. if no actions are taken, nothing changes. a lack of change also being equivalent to stasis.
i'm not expressing this thought well. (not surprising, i have no trouble thinking in more than three-and-a-bit dimensions, but can never explain that well either.)
point is that the quoted line is a truism. :D
(the flip side is, of course, that pure chaos is utter destruction. chaos and order feed into one another. the ideal for humans, as with many things, is to find stable balance point. this is rarely equidistant from the ends of the continuum though.)
and the sort of rent in question, arguably. (renting out a house and collecting the rents is a bit different from government granted monopoly rents, you see)
Re: Re: Techdirt take: But, users still /have/ their "stolen" identities!
i'm pretty sure that line comes fairly directly from that commentry, actually. (or at least it seems to be based on the comedy skit where the guy's trying to get the bank to admit that it was robbed, not him.)
