I remember years ago as a sysadmin being stupefied at a mail server that was not functioning correctly. Everything checked out yet mail was not getting through. Only after breaking out the telnet mail.host.com 25 as above did I query the network admin and found out that the Cisco firewall's ESMTP security feature was messing with the application layer.
It does seem kind of unusual that a wireless company's equipment would have such an option enabled or even that such an option would be present on their type of equipment.
