It just seems like a bad move because (and apparently you have misunderstood this) artificial scarcity is not a good thing

It certainly doesn't matter whether or not the child did anything.
The parent told the police that they didn't have any right to question their child without their observation and/or an attorney present. That is their right under our laws.
The POLICE broke the law and even if the child admitted to them that he had in fact thrown it, his statement would likely get thrown out of court. And with it the whole case./div>
