Bidding to be with Celebrities

from the bad-ideas dept

I had heard a little bit about UltimateBid.com, but here's an article that looks a little deeper at what they are offering. Basically, it's an auction site that will sell time with celebrities. The more I think about this, the worse it sounds to me. I can't believe people actually would spend so much money just to spend time with someone famous.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wuss!

So what is it that you don't like, Mike? The business model, or the market it's targetting. 8-)

I say more power to them!

Heh heh. Okay, you got me there. I'll admit the business model is probably just dandy. I think it just makes me a little sick that (1) people are so infatuated with famous people that they want to pay such ridiculous sums to be with them and (2) that famous people are willing to "sell" themselves in this way. I completely see why it might be a huge success, I'm just morally opposed to it all. :)
